PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT NOTE = "Comments on Mars Exploration Rover Moessbauer Summed Spectra data" PUBLICATION_DATE = 2005-05-21 END_OBJECT = TEXT END COMMENTS ON MER MOESSBAUER SUMMED SPECTRA DATA May 21, 2007. ------------- PDS labels for files in the CALIB directory have been provided. February 3, 2006: MER Release 7, Sols 451-540 --------------------------------------------- Starting on sol 461, the MER-A (Spirit) Moessbauer counter configuration was changed to accumulate 14.4 keV data only. A detailed explanation of this change is in preparation and will be added to the data set shortly. The change applies only to the Moessbauer instrument on MER-A. July 29, 2005: MER Release 5, Sols 271-360 --------------------------------------------------------- With the fifth release of MB RDR data, the "MGV" and the "MXV" product types will no longer be included in the archive. These products were basically the same as the "MGC" and "MXC" products with an additional column providing one velocity scale. The MER MB team no longer recommends the use of this velocity scale, because it does not accurately take into account the change of the Moessbauer drive characteristics, which exhibit a small temperature dependence. Starting with the third release a set of velocity scales has been provided which takes the temperature dependence into account. Each column in these separate velocity files corresponds to a preset temperature window in that matches the columns in the "MGC" and the "MXC" files. To avoid confusion about which velocity scales to use, the "MGV" and "MXV" files from previous deliveries have been removed from the PDS archive. The removal of these two product types left only one file type ("ESE") in the "calibrated spectra" data set. It was decided by the MER project and PDS to combine the two MB RDR data sets into one data set by moving the "ESE" files into the "Summed Spectra" data set. February 28, 2005: MER Release 3, Sols 91-180 --------------------------------------------------------- For release 3 of the MER Moessbauer archives there are velocity calibration files for surface measurements and the CCT in the CALIB directory. These files consist of 13 columns: one per each temperature window. Columns 1, 2, and 12 are empty because the instruments never reached those temperatures on Mars. The last temperature window contains a room temperature extrapolation of the velocity scale. That is the velocity scale currently provided with the MGV files. The velocity calibration data are provided in comma delimited files. PDS labels will be added to the archive when they are available. Mineralogical interpretations by the Moessbauer Team of the Moessbauer data have been published in the following articles. Morris, R.V., et al., Mineralogy at Gusev Crater from the Moessbauer Spectrometer on the Spirit Rover, Science, 305, 833-836, 2004. Klingelhoefer, G., et al., Jarosite and hematite at Meridiani Planum from Opportunity's Moessbauer Spectrometer, Science, 306, 1740-1745, 2004. October 25, 2004: Release of MER Opportunity Sols 31-90 --------------------------------------------- This release includes Moessbauer summed spectra from sols 31 to 90. It also includes revised versions of all Moessbauer summed spectra acquired during sols 1 to 30. Energy spectrum files (ESC) are not present for some sols in this release because energy spectra were not acquired on those sols. Sometimes energy spectra were cut to save time for integration.
