The radio observations were carried out using the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). ============================================================================= ARCHIVE INFORMATION ============================================================================= This archive has the structure illustrated in the diagram below. The archive includes the MRO-M-RSS-1-MAGR-V1.0 data set plus files (AAREADME.TXT, ERRATA.TXT, and VOLDESC.CAT) and directories (CATALOG, DOCUMENT, and INDEX) which are normally associated with PDS volumes. Since MRO is an ongoing mission, this archive is 'accumulating.' At regular intervals (approximately quarterly), recently acquired data are added to the collection. Corrections may be made to files which have already been included, and files such as AAREADME.TXT and INDEX/INDEX.TAB are updated to reflect the new scope of the archive. The primary data types for this archive are the Orbit Data File (ODF), the Radio Science Receiver (RSR) file, and the Tracking and Navigation File (TNF). ODFs are stored in the ODF directory, RSRs are stored in the RSR directory, and TNFs are stored in the TNF directory. RSR data in this archive follow two specifications--a standard specification described by 0159_SCIENCE_L5.TXT and a non-standard specification described by MRO_RSR.TXT, which was developed especially for MRO. Both documents can be found in the DOCUMENT directory of this archive. RSR data collection was not originally planned for MRO Radio Science; but the MRO project requested that tests be conducted, and a more systematic approach to data collection was eventually authorized, leading to a need for archiving. The primary data files are accompanied by secondary data files. These include reconstructed C-Kernel (high-gain antenna ACK, solar array SCK, spacecraft CCK) files, predicted C-Kernel files (high-gain antenna ACP, solar array SCP, spacecraft CCP) files, Gimbal Angle (high-gain antenna AGK, solar array SAK) files, Light-Time (LTF) files, Maneuver Performance Data Files (MPD), Ionosphere Calibration (ION) files, Small Forces Files (SFF), Earth Orientation Parameter Files (EOP), Downlink Frequency Files (DLF), Spacecraft/Planetary Ephemeris (SPK) files, Weather (WEA) files, and Troposphere Calibration (TRO) files. The CATALOG directory contains summary information on the MRO mission, the spacecraft, radio science instrumentation, the data set, and listings of references and personnel. These files are structured to facilitate machine handling but are also intended to be human readable. The diagram below shows the organization of this archive, starting from the root. |===================================================================| | | | MRO Radio Science RDA Directory Structure for MAGR | | | |===================================================================| | | | root | | | | | |- AAREADME.TXT | | |- ERRATA.TXT | | |- VOLDESC.CAT | | | | | |- [CATALOG] | | | |- CATINFO.TXT | | | |- MISSION.CAT | | | |- INSTHOST.CAT | | | |- INST.CAT | | | |- REF.CAT | | | |- PERSON.CAT | | | |- DATASET.CAT | | | `- TARGET.CAT | | | | | |- [DOCUMENT] | | | |- DOCINFO.TXT | | | |- ... | | | | | |- [INDEX] | | | |- INDXINFO.TXT | | | |- INDEX.LBL | | | `- INDEX.TAB | | | | | |- [CALIB] | | | |- CALINFO.TXT | | | |- LSK_YYMMDD.TLS | | | |- MRO_YYMMDD.STK | | | |- TSC_YYMMDD.CLK | | | |- EARTH_TOPO_YYMMDD.TF | | | `- labels | | | | | |- [ANCILLARY] | | | |- [ACK] | | | |- [ACP] | | | |- [AGK] | | | |- [CCK] | | | |- [CCP] | | | |- [DLF] | | | |- [EOP] | | | |- [ION] | | | |- [LTF] | | | |- [MPD] | | | |- [SAK] | | | |- [SCK] | | | |- [SCP] | | | |- [SFF] | | | |- [SPK] | | | |- [TRO] | | | `- [WEA] | | | | | |- [ODF] | | |- [RSR] | | `- [TNF] | |===================================================================| ============================================================================= ERRATA ============================================================================= A cumulative list of errors and changes is maintained in the ERRATA.TXT file. ============================================================================= DISC FORMAT ============================================================================= The archive is organized according to the PDS standard for "one data set, one volume." This file (AAREADME.TXT), a PDS volume object definition (VOLDESC.CAT), and the listing of errors and changes (ERRATA.TXT) are included at the root level. The following directories of descriptive material are also at the root level: CALIB contains a Leapsecond kernel file, a Spacecraft Clock Conversion file, a Topocentric Reference Frame Definition Kernel for DSN Stations, a NAIF Structures Kernel, and their respective PDS labels. CATALOG contains descriptive files for cataloging the data in this archive. DOCUMENT contains a plain text Software Interface Specification (SIS) for the data types that do not have a full PDS label as well as other documents which may be useful in manipulating and understanding the data. INDEX contains index information on each of the data files included in this archive. ============================================================================= FILE FORMAT ============================================================================= All data files in the archive are accompanied by detached or attached PDS labels, which describe their contents. Files in the ODF, RSR, and TNF directories are binary; files in the CALIB directory are ASCII; and files in the ANCILLARY directory can be either ASCII or binary, depending on file type. Detached labels have the same file name as the data file except that the label file name has the suffix ".LBL". Detached labels are ASCII files. Detailed documentation on file structure, formatting, and content is available for all file types either through complete PDS labels or through Software Interface Specifications (SISs) in the DOCUMENT directory. Text files (*.TXT file names) and catalog files (*.CAT file names) are stream files. ============================================================================= SOFTWARE ============================================================================= No software has been included with this archive. ============================================================================= ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ============================================================================= These data were collected under the auspices of the MRO Project. Members of the Radio Science Systems Group (RSSG) involved in data acquisition included Daniel Kahan and Sami Asmar. ============================================================================= DISCLAIMER ============================================================================= Although considerable care has gone into making this archive, errors are both possible and likely. Users of the data are advised to exercise the same caution as they would when dealing with any other unknown data set. Reports of errors or difficulties would be appreciated. Please contact one of the persons listed below. ============================================================================= COGNIZANT PERSONNEL ============================================================================= The person most directly responsible for construction and release of this archive is Daniel Kahan, a member of the Radio Science Systems Group (RSSG) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
