SAM includes the Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (QMS), the Gas Chromatograph (GC), and the Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS). ============================================================================== VOLUME SET INFORMATION ============================================================================== SAM RDR data are stored in an archive volume having the directory structure illustrated below. The SAM EDR data, the raw data from which this archive is derived, are "safed" in PDS but not formally archived, as the lowest-level SAM RDR product is essentially equivalent to the raw data. ("Safed" data are preserved in PDS but do not necessarily meet PDS standards for documentation and peer review. They are available upon request.) root | |- AAREADME.TXT Introduction to the archive (this file) |- ERRATA.TXT Release notes and errata for the archive |- VOLDESC.CAT Description of the contents of the archive | |- CALIB | | | |- CALINFO.TXT Description of the CALIBRATION directory | |- SAM_HK_CONVERSIONS.CSV Conversion factors for science and | engineering units | |- SAM_TM_CONVERSIONS.LBL PDS label describing SAM_HK_CONVERSIONS.TXT | |- CATALOG | | | |- CATINFO.TXT Description of the CATALOG directory | |- MSL_INSTHOST.CAT Instrument host (rover) description | |- MSL_MISSION.CAT Mission description | |- MSL_REF.CAT References mentioned in MSL*.CAT files | |- PERSON.CAT Relevant SAM personnel | |- SAM_INST.CAT Instrument description | |- SAMRDRL0_DS.CAT Level 0 data set description | |- SAMRDRL1A_DS.CAT Level 1A data set description | |- SAMRDRL1B_DS.CAT Level 1B data set description | |- SAMRDRL2_DS.CAT Level 2 data set description | |- SAM_REF.CAT References mentioned in SAM*.CAT files | |- DATA | | | |- EIDnnnnn Directory of data acquired for SAM | | Experiment ID nnnnn | |- LEVEL0 | | |- *.CSV, *.TAB SAM Level 0 data products | |- *.LBL PDS labels describing data products | |- LEVEL1A | | |- *.CSV, *.TAB SAM Level 1A data products | |- *.LBL PDS labels describing data products | |- LEVEL1B | | |- *.CSV, *.TAB SAM Level 1B data products | |- *.LBL PDS labels describing data products | |- LEVEL2 | | |- *.CSV, *.TAB SAM Level 2 data products | |- *.LBL PDS labels describing data products | |- DOCUMENT | | | |- DOCINFO.TXT Description of the DOCUMENT directory | |- RDRDPSIS.PDF,.HTM SAM RDR data product specification | |- RDRDPSIS.LBL PDS label for RDRDPSIS.* | |- RDRARCHSIS.PDF,.HTM SAM RDR Archive SIS | |- RDRARCHSIS.LBL PDS label for RDRARCHSIS.* | |- PDSDD.FUL PDS Data Dictionary | |- PDSDD.LBL PDS label for PDSDD.FUL | |- INDEX | |- INDXINFO.TXT Description of the INDEX directory |- L0_INDEX.TAB, LBL Table of Level 0 data products in the archive |- L1A_INDEX.TAB, LBL Table of Level 1A data products |- L1B_INDEX.TAB, LBL Table of Level 1B data products |- L2_INDEX.TAB, LBL Table of Level 2 data products ============================================================================== FILE FORMAT ============================================================================== SAM RDR data files are stored as ASCII tables with file names ending in CSV or TAB. CSV tables are in comma-separated-value format, meaning that fields in a row are separated by commas, and the fields are not padded with spaces to be the same length in each row. Hence the lengths of rows in a table may vary. These files may be read in a text editor and are easily loaded into spreadsheet programs. TAB tables have rows that are all the same length, and the columns in each row align at defined byte offsets. Each table is accompanied by a detached PDS label with the same name but the extension LBL, which describes the format and content of the table. PDS labels are ASCII text files that may be read in a text editor. Detailed documentation on data file contents is available in the SAM RDR Software Interface Specification (RDRDPSIS) in the DOCUMENT directory. All text files in the archive, including PDS labels, are delimited with carriage-return (ASCII 13) line-feed (ASCII 10) pairs at the end of the line. PDS requires documentation to be archived as ASCII text for long-term readability. However, some documents contain figures and other elements that cannot be rendered as ASCII text, and these are given in PDF format for the user's convenience. A text or HTML version is also provided to meet the ASCII text requirement, with images stored as separate files. ============================================================================== COGNIZANT PERSONNEL ============================================================================== SAM RDR data products are generated and assembled into archive volumes by the MSL SAM Science Team, and delivered to Planetary Data System Geosciences Node. The Geosciences Node releases the archives to the public according to the MSL Project release schedule. SAM Science Team Archive Representative: Heather Franz, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, heather.b.franz@nasa.gov. PDS Geosciences Node Representative: Susan Slavney, Washington University, Susan.Slavney@wustl.edu.
