END_OBJECT = TEXT END Chandrayaan-1 Mini-RF Mini-SAR Instrument Science Data Archive AAREADME.TXT 19 January 2011 Mini-RF POC Team Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory ============================================================================= INTRODUCTION ============================================================================= This archive volume contains the complete delivery of the Mini-SAR (also called "Mini-RF Forerunner") science data products. The Mini-SAR instrument was a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that orbited the Moon aboard the ISRO Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft. It operated during 2009. This archive volume contains Raw SAR, Level 1 SAR, Level 2 SAR, and Level 3 SAR mosaic products and ancillary data, including SPICE kernels. It does not contain scatterometry products. The instrument and data products are similar to those of the Mini-RF instrument on board the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft that launched and began operations in 2009. The Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was successfully launched from India on October 22, 2008 and reached lunar orbit as planned. The Mini-SAR instrument operated during two data collection seasons. The first data collection season began on 15 Feburary 2009 and concluded on 15 April 2009. Both of the spacecraft's star sensors, used for attitude determination, failed in July 2009. This complicated the pointing of the Mini-SAR instrument and delayed the resumption of data collection. The second data collection season began on 18 August 2009 and ended prematurely on 27 August 2009 when contact with the host spacecraft was lost and the mission ended. This volume contains the complete data sets from both collection periods. This volume also contains data collected during a period of instrument testing and calibration in November 2008, prior to the beginning of the first science season. Plans had been in place for the instrument to also collect nadir mode scatterometry data while over the lunar poles and to process these data into calibrated and derived data products. However, due to various issues, scientifically useful scatterometry data were never obtained. Therefore, no derived scatterometric products are included in this archive although some raw data collected while in scatterometry mode on January 18, 2009, and used for calibration are included. ============================================================================= VOLUME SET INFORMATION ============================================================================= This volume is divided into CATALOG, DOCUMENT, INDEX, EXTRAS, GEOMETRY, CALIB, and DATA directories. The DATA directory has a SAR subdirectory which contains one subdirectory for each set of orbits. These are further divided into RAW, LEVEL1, LEVEL2, and HOUSEKEEPING directories. There is also a MOSAICS directory under SAR, containing polar mosaics. The following diagram illustrates the directory tree. Root Directory | |-- AAREADME.TXT Introduction to the archive. |-- ERRATA.TXT Errata and notes about the archive. |-- VOLDESC.CAT Description of the archive for the PDS catalog | |-- CALIB/ Contains the calibration products produced in the Arecibo | | and Green Bank Radio Telescope experiments. | |--- ARECIBO/ Contains the Arecibo data. | |--- NADIR/ Contains the nadir calibration data. | |-- CATALOG/ Contains the primary documentation for the archives in the | form of text files with the extension .CAT, used to populate | the PDS online catalog for searching. | |-- DATA/ Contains the science data products in subdirectories organized | | by orbit number and product type. | | | |- SAR/ Contains the SAR data products. | |-/ Contains the data products associated with a | | | particular set of lunar orbits. | | |- RAW/ Contains raw SAR data. | | |- LEVEL1/ Contains the Level 1 SAR data products. | | |- LEVEL2/ Contains the Level 2 SAR data products. | | |- HOUSEKEEPING/ Contains miscellaneous instrument housekeeping data. | | | |- MOSAICS/ Contains the Level 3 SAR polar mosaics. | |-- DOCUMENT/ Contains the Software Interface Specification documents, | detailed documentation about the data products. | |-- EXTRAS/ Contains subdirectories containing browse images and orbit | | number files. | | | |--- MK/ Subdirectory containing the SPICE metakernel. | | | |--- ORBNUM/ Subdirectory contains the orbit number files. | | | |--- QUIKVIEW/ | | |- / | | | Subdirectory contains the browse images in orbit range-based | | | subdirectories. They are | | included only for completeness. The contents of this | | directory have not been validated for accuracy or science | | quality. | | | |- PACKETS/ | | Subdirectory of unprocessed raw packet data extracted from | | telemetry. | |- CK/ | Subdirectory of binary attitude (CK) SPICE kernels that may | cover some of the period during which the unprocessed packet | data were collected. | |-- GEOMETRY/ | |-- DATA/ Contains SPICE kernels used in the processing of the data | products. This directory contains subdirectories. See | GEOMETRY/GEOMINFO.TXT for a description of these. | |-- INDEX/ Contains an index that lists every data product in the archive, a separate index for SPICE kernels, and a list of MD5 checksums for the entire archive. ============================================================================= FILE FORMAT ============================================================================= All data files are accompanied by detached or attached PDS labels, which describe their contents. Detached labels have the same file name as the data file except that the label name has the suffix ".LBL". All text documents, text data files (with the exception of SPICE kernels), and other meta information files such as descriptions, PDS object definitions and detached PDS labels are stream format files, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and a line feed character (ASCII 10) at the end of the record. This allows the files to be read by Windows, Unix and Macintosh operating systems. Detailed documentation on file structure and contents formatting is available for all file types either through complete PDS labels or through Software Interface Specifications (SISs) in the DOCUMENT directory. Text files (*.TXT file names) and catalog files (*.CAT file names) are stream files. ============================================================================= SPECIAL NOTE ON SPICE KERNELS ============================================================================= Typically, the SPICE kernels for a mission are archived separately from the data products. This is not the case with the Mini-SAR archive. The SPICE kernels applicable to these products are included in this archive volume in the GEOMETRY/data directory. This directory only contains SPICE kernels that were used in the processing of the Mini-SAR products or have been deemed by the Mini-SAR team as potentially being of use in their later analysis. It is not a complete kernel archive for the Chandrayaan-1 mission. Note that the SPICE kernels included in this archive conform to the JPL Navigation and Ancillary Information Facility (NAIF) PDS node conventions which differ in some ways from the usual PDS standards. See the GEOMETRY/GEOMINFO.TXT file in this archive volume for details on the Chandrayaan-1/Mini-SAR SPICE kernels, for a description of the differences between the NAIF SPICE kernel archiving conventions and the regular PDS standards, and for a description of tools that NAIF provides that facilitate the use and manipulation of SPICE kernels. ============================================================================= SOFTWARE ============================================================================= No software is included as part of this archive volume. However, see the GEOMETRY/GEOMINFO.TXT file for references to externally available software for use with SPICE kernels. ============================================================================= DISCLAIMER ============================================================================= Although considerable care has gone into making this volume set, errors may exist.
