All products have been geolocated using the final reconstructed SPICE kernels required to be used in the final MESSENGER PDS product generation. For definitive trajectory information the whole-mission kernel should be employed. Planetary constants kernel pck00010_msgr_v21.tpc was used to determine the transformation from inertial to body-fixed coordinates and to provide a reference radius for the GDR products. It is important to note that the revised transformation entails a substantial shift in longitude, as well as a slight shift in pole position of a given date, so that maps included in previous MESSENGER PDS deliveries do not align exactly with the GDR products included in this delivery. This shift of ~0.1 degree was implemented to conform to the International Astronomical Union definition of prime meridian based on the location of a single crater, Hun Kal, at a prescribed longitude of 20 degrees West, whose position is estimated from a series of images. The intention was to make the prime meridian agree with the principle dynamical axes that determine Mercury's spin-orbital resonance. The RDR and RADR products give the absolute radial distance from the center of mass of Mercury, rather than altitude with respect to a reference sphere as in previous versions. The current release uses a reference radius of 2439.4 km. Previous releases employed a radius of 2440.0 km. The spacecraft SAT_ALTITUDE given in the RDR column 18 is with respect to a 2440-km sphere. GDR directory: The HDEC, or count files, correspond to the HDEM, or gridded topographic products of the corresponding name. They reflect the number of validated ground returns used to generate the topographic value at that location. Values are zero for grid cells in which no ground returns have been registered. The values in the HDEC files therefore chart the arcs along which MLA collected data. The concentration of returns is highest near the north pole where the periapsis lies. The area between tracks has count values that are uniformly zero.
