The contents and directory structure of the PDS3 archive have not changed, but PDS4 metadata in the form of XML files have been added. The file README.TXT in the root directory has more information. The file you are now reading, AAREADME.TXT, was written for the original PDS3 archive and does not have information about the PDS4 additions. ---- Original contents of AAREADME.TXT are below this line. ---- MESSENGER Radio Science MESSENGER Radio Science Reduced Data Record Archive MESSRS_1001 AAREADME.TXT 11 February 2013 Mark Perry Mike Reid Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory ============================================================================= INTRODUCTION ============================================================================= This volume contains archived, derived, reduced data record (RDR) radio science data for the MESSENGER radio science and gravity investigations. It contains all the archived RDR data. These data are contained in one volume. The radio observations were carried out using the MESSENGER Spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). ============================================================================= VOLUME INFORMATION ============================================================================= The volume is organized according to the PDS standard for a single volume. The structure and contents of this data volume are described in greater detail in the MESS_RS_RDR_OCC_AVSIS archive volume software interface specification included in the DOCUMENT directory of this volume. This volume is divided into four directories: DATA CATALOG DOCUMENT INDEX The DATA directory contains the delivered products. There are three data product types: the Occultation Summary (OCCSUM), the Spherical Harmonics ASCII Data Records (SHADR), and the Spherical Harmonics Binary Data Records (SHBDR). These are stored in three corresponding subdirectories named OCC, SHADR, and SHBDR respectively. The CATALOG directory contains summary and cataloging information on the MESSENGER mission, the spacecraft, radio science instrumentation, the data set, and listings of references and personnel. These files are structured to facilitate machine handling but are also intended to be human readable. The DOCUMENT directory contains the software interface specification (SIS) documents that provide detailed descriptions of the products and possibly other documents that the instrument team may find useful to include. The INDEX directory contains the PDS standard INDEX.TAB and MD5.TAB files and their associated detached labels. These are used by the PDS for indexing and data validation purposes. The table in INDEX.TAB lists every data product in the archive. The root directory of the volume also contains three standard PDS informational files: AAREADME.TXT The AAREADME.TXT file (this file) is a free-form text file that provides a summary-level description of the volume. It contains an attached PDS label. ERRATA.TXT The ERRATA.TXT file is a free-form text file that contains a cumulative list of errors and release- related information. VOLDESC.CAT The VOLDESC.CAT file is an ODL-formatted structured text file that contains volume definition and identification information and contact information for key personnel. The volume directory structure is described in the archive volume SIS, DOCUMENT/MESS_RS_RDR_OCC_AVSIS document included in this archive. ============================================================================= FILE FORMAT ============================================================================= All product and ancillary files in the volume are accompanied by detached or attached PDS labels, which describe their contents. Detached labels have the same file name as the data file except that the label name has the suffix ".LBL". Detailed documentation on file structure and content formatting is available for all file product types either in complete PDS labels or in the Software Interface Specifications (SISs) in the DOCUMENT directory. Text files (*.TXT file names) and catalog files (*.CAT file names) are STREAM files. ============================================================================= SOFTWARE ============================================================================= No software is included in this archive volume. ============================================================================= DISCLAIMER ============================================================================= Although considerable care has gone into making this volume, errors are both possible and likely. Users of the data are advised to exercise the same caution as they would when dealing with any other unknown data set. Reports of errors or difficulties would be appreciated. Please contact one of the persons listed below. ============================================================================= COGNIZANT PERSONNEL ============================================================================= The person most directly responsible for construction and release of this volume is Mark Perry, a staff scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Although many people contributed to the volume set, any faults in the product are his alone.
