During the course of the MESSENGER mission the RS science team may update previously released data products or documentation; for example, updates may occur due to changes in calibration data or procedures. Updates will be reported in this file. Older versions of data and documentation will not be retained in the archive. Section A of this file contains an entry for each MESSENGER release with general information about the contents of the release, in order from newest to oldest. Updates to previously released files are reported in these entries, along with any known errata. Section B of this file contains general notes, if any, concerning the archive as a whole. ******** SECTION A ******** -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: N/A, between releases DATE: 2016-07-19 Product mess_rs_2011102_2011102_mpd in the ancillary/mpd directory has been removed from the archive. It is superseded by another product in that directory, mess_rs_2011077_2011077_mpd, which covers the same data sampling but with greater accuracy. RELEASE NUMBER: 14 RELEASE DATE: 2015-10-09 DATA COVERAGE: 2014-09-18 to 2015-04-30 (Mercury Orbit Year 4 and Year 5) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. This is the final release of Radio Science EDR products. The MESSENGER mission ended on 2015-04-30 and this release contains all the data collected for archive up to that point. 2. ANCILLARY/LTF - Additional Light Time Files created from reconstructed ephemeris ("recon LTF") for the pre-orbit period are included. They cover the same period as those already in the archive, but are slightly more accurate. They are not specifically needed for the current radio science task, since the already archived LTF files are accurate enough for this; however, it was decided to include the recon LTFs with this archive volume as they might prove useful in the future. An LTFINFO.TXT file was added to this directory to identify and describe them. 3. ANCILLARY/WEA, /TRO, /ION - The DSN weather (WEA), tropospheric (TRO) and ionospheric (ION) ancillary products are produced and provided by the DSN and contain information about Earth atmospheric conditions that can affect radio signals. Therefore, the end of their data coverage does not necessarily exactly match the time of the end of the MESSENGER mission (30 Apr 2015, 19:26 UTC). In their cases, data coverage extends a bit further. 4. DATASET.CAT - The STOP_TIME field for the archived data set contains the time of the last record in the last product in the DATA directory, in this case that of the last TNF file (151201740SC236DSS15_234). This time is later than the end of the mission because the Radio Science data products are provided by the DSN and contain tracking data. These products contain uplink data as well which can be timestamped later than the last received signal. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 13 RELEASE DATE: 2015-03-06 DATA COVERAGE: 2014-03-18 to 2014-09-17 (Mercury Orbit Year 3) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. The Radio Science Receiver (RSR) data are captured only during spacecraft to planet occultations. The files in DATA/RSR/ contain data only up through 08 September 2014 as there were no occultations from after that day through 17 September 2014 -- the end of the data coverage period for this release. Coverage gaps occurring elsewhere in the RSR data archive are also due to lack of occultations. This is normal for MESSENGER's RSR products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 12 RELEASE DATE: 2014-09-05 DATA COVERAGE: 2013-09-18 to 2014-03-17 (Mercury Orbit Year 3) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. No Small Forces Files (SFF) or Maneuver Performance Data (MDM) files were produced for release 12, since no orbit-correction maneuvers (OCM)s occurred since the last release. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 11 RELEASE DATE: 2014-03-07 DATA COVERAGE: 2013-03-18 to 2013-09-17 (Mercury Orbit Year 3) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. For release 11, the MDM and MPD files were augmented to include the spacecraft center of mass (COM). Combined with the antenna locations provided in the RS IK (instrument kernel) file and the attitude data in the CK file, these COM data enable users to correct the received Doppler for spacecraft rotations. These data enable correction for the motion of RF antennas as the spacecraft rotates. The COM data are provided in two coordinate systems, identified as 'development' and 'G&C'. The two systems differ only in the location of the origin; both systems use the same orientation of the axes, as defined in the spacecraft FK file. The development system places the origin at the center of the adaptor ring, which is at one end of the spacecraft, near the location of the planet-viewing instruments. The G&C system places the origin so that the solar-array rotation axis goes through the origin; this location is closer to the physical center of the spacecraft. The two coordinate systems are separated by 0.89662 m along the Z axis. The G&C origin is located at (0,0,-0.89662) in the development system. The RS IK file uses the development system. These ancillary products are further described in the DOCUMENT/MDM_DESC.TXT and DOCUMENT/MPD_DESC.TXT files in this archive. 2. The Momentum Dump Maneuver (MDM) file is also modified such that numeric fields with unknown values contain UNKNOWN_CONSTANT = 999.99 rather than the string "N/A". The label is updated to include UNKNOWN_CONSTANT in the appropriate fields and the FIELD object BYTES keywords have updated values as needed. 3. New versions of the previously delivered Maneuver Performance Data (MPD) products are included. These new versions contain an additional field, CMSC_AR, that is identical to the CMSC field except that the Z-component is adjusted in reference to the adapter ring (also called the "development") frame as described above. These newer versions supplant the earlier versions. 4. No Maneuver Performance Data (MPD) or Small Forces File (SFF) products were produced for the period covered by release 11. 5. A correction is made to the notes relating to Release 8 below. The following wording appears in four places relating to four RSR files: "The data in the two products were collected at the same time, but at different DSN stations." These sentences should read: "The data in the two products were collected at the same time, but with different bandwidths on different channels of the RSR" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 10 RELEASE DATE: 2013-09-06 DATA COVERAGE: 2012-09-18 to 2013-03-17 (Mercury Orbit Year 2) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. No Small Forces Files (SFF) or Maneuver Performance Data (MDM) files were produced for release 10, since no orbit-correction maneuvers (OCM)s occurred since the last release. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 9 RELEASE DATE: 2013-03-08 DATA COVERAGE: 2012-03-26 to 2012-09-17 (Mercury Orbit Year 2) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: SFF 1. ANCILLARY/SFF/MESS_RS_2012107_2012107_SFF.TAB ANCILLARY/SFF/MESS_RS_2012107_2012107_SFF.LBL Small forces file. This product and its label were delivered in release 8 and are redelivered in release 9 to correct an error of missing double quotes around string fields in columns 3 and 4. Column 5, MET, was modified to include the clock partition. The values in the fields did not change. 2. ANCILLARY/SFF/MESS_RS_SFF.FMT This file was modified to correct a data type error. Comments were added to indicate that SFF products delivered in Release 9 and later will use a different version of this file. 3. ANCILLARY/SFF/MESS_RS_SFF2.FMT This is a new version of the SFF product format file. It accounts for the new MET format in column 5 used from this release forward. The MET values in column 5 are now given as quoted strings with the clock partition number in SPICE format (e.g., "1/43450596"). 4. ANCILLARY/ANT/MESS_RS_ANT.TXT The MET field in this product (3rd column) was modified to contain the clock partition number and the field was inclosed in double quotes. E.g., (e.g., "1/43450596"). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 8 RELEASE DATE: 2012-09-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-09-20 to 2012-03-25 (Mercury Orbit) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None 1. DATA/TNF/ - The Tracking & Navigation Files (TNF) contain approximately 675 bytes of text prepended to the beginning of the mostly binary file that look very much like an attached PDS label; however, it is not a valid PDS label. Since the attached text does not constitute a valid PDS label and a valid detached label is provided with each TNF product file, it has been suggested that this attached text "pseudo-label" be removed from the product files. It was decided that this will not be done because the products are of a standard type produced by the NASA DSN and removing the label would require changing the TRK-2-44 specification. This would have ramafications well beyond the MESSENGER project. Users of the TNF products should recognize that the leading text does not constitute a PDS label. 2. ANCILLARY/WEA - The Weather Data product is a cummulative product that contains data for all days starting with the first day of the year up to the point when it was produced. In previous deliveries, all WEA files containing data for the period covered by the delivery were included in the archive. In consideration of the fact that all files contain data from the first of the year, it was decided that from now on, only the latest WEA will be provided in the archive. This latest file contains all of the previous data for the year; therefore, to include the earlier files would be redundant. In the future, multiple WEA products will be provided if needed to cover deliveries that span multiple years. 3. ANCILLARY/ANT - The version number has been removed from the ANT file. This is a cummulative file that will supplant those from previous deliveries. 4. ANCILLARY/MDM - The version number has been removed from the MDM file. This is a cummulative file that will supplant those from previous deliveries. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 6 RELEASE DATE: 2011-09-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2009-10-15 to 2011-05-17 (Mercury 4 Cruise, Mercury Orbit) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR REASON FOR UPDATES: Problem with previous ACK products. 1. ANCILLARY/ACK/ - The previously-archived antenna configuration (ACK) files contained errors due to a flaw in the program that generated the ACK files. These files are deprecated in the archive. All archived files of the name MESS_RS___ACK.TXT/.LBL should be discarded. The ACK product is replaced by the ANT antenna configuration file product. 2. ANCILLARY/ANT/ - A new antenna configuration product that replaces the ACK products. The new program used to generate ANT files does not operate on historical data and cannot generate correct antenna configuration for the cruise period. Therfore, there are gaps in the data. The new ANT file contains antenna configurations for each of the three Mercury flybys but does not contain antenna configurations for the remaining portions of the cruise period, which does not have scientific value for studies of Mercury. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 5 RELEASE DATE: 2010-03-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2008-10-21 to 2009-10-14 (Mercury 3 Cruise, Mercury 3 Flyby) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR REASON FOR UPDATES: Correction of processing errors. 1. DATA/TNF/ - All files. The TNF data products (*.DAT) contain an attached pseudo-PDS label at the beginnings of the files. These are not valid PDS labels and will be replaced by valid ones in a future release. Redelivered TNF label files produced from data acquired from June 13, 2008 (day 165) through October 14, 2008 (day 288) with corrected DATA_SET_ID and added PRODUCT_VERSION_ID = "2.0". 2. DATA/DDOR/ - All files. The DDOR data products (*.DAT) contain an attached pseudo-PDS label at the beginnings of the files. These are not valid PDS labels and will be replaced by valid ones in a future release. 3. DATA/ODF/MESS_RS_092721*.DAT/*.LBL - Six of the ODF data products have file names which differ from those given in the EDR SIS. These particular files are special data acquisitions associated with the Mercury 3 flyby. The parent files from which they are copied have longer file names that include a single day and a time. It was not possible to fit this within they existing naming convention for ODF files or to keep this information within the file names and stay within the PDS 27.3 file name length limit. Therefore, these 6 files follow the convention MESS_RS_yydddhhmm_dn_ODF.DAT or .LBL. yy is the year, ddd the day of the year, hh hour, mm minute of data start, dn the DSS, rr (optional) is the integration period in seconds. A future release of the EDR SIS will be modified to reflect this. 4. ANCILLARY/ACK/ - All files. The ACK products are defined in the EDR SIS as being TABLE files (*.TAB). They are now defined and redelivered as text (*.TXT) files. Their associated detached labels are redefined accordingly. A future release of the EDR SIS will be modified to reflect this. The ACK files generated from data acquired from June 20, 2008 (day 172) through October 19, 2008 (day 293) have been renamed such that they have the text file extension (*.TXT) as described above. Their DATA_SET_ID values were corrected also and the PRODUCT_VERSION_ID field was added to their labels and given a value of "2.0". 5. ANCILLARY/SFF/ - All files. The Small Forces Files (SFF) have time strings in the third column of each data record that are enclosed in double quotes per PDS standards. This is not indicated in the EDR SIS. A future release of the EDR SIS will be modified to reflect this. MESS_RS_2008079_2008079_SFF.LBL and MESS_RS_2007353_2007353_SFF.LBL: Redelivered with corrected RECORD_BYTES, ROW_BYTES, HEADER->BYTES, DATA_SET_ID, and added PRODUCT_VERSION_ID = "2.0". 6. ANCILLARY/LTF/MESS_RS_2008016_2009364_LTF.LBL: The light time file product label was modified to correct the values in the RECORD_BYTES and DATA_SET_ID fields and add the PRODUCT_VERSION_ID field. It is redelivered as PRODUCT_VERSION_ID = "2.0". 7. ANCILLARY/MPD/MESS_RS_2008079_2008079_MPD.LBL: Redelivered with corrected DATA_SET_ID and PUBLICATION_DATE, and added PRODUCT_VERSION_ID = "2.0". -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 4 RELEASE DATE: 2009-04-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2008-01-29 to 2008-10-20 (Mercury 2 Cruise, Mercury 2 Flyby) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR REASON FOR UPDATES: Correction of processing errors. 1. The file TNF_SIS.HTM in the Document directory is missing from the archive. It will be included in a future release, or sooner if possible. However, it is included in this archive volume in PDF format as DOCUMENT/TRK_2_34.PDF. 2. File DATA/ODF/MESS_RS_08014_014_14_10S_ODF.DAT exceeded the PDS file name length limit (27.3 format). Renamed to: DATA/ODF/MESS_RS_08014_014_10S_ODF.DAT. Label manually edited to correct this. 3. File DATA/ODF/MESS_RS_08079_1940_10PER1_ODF.DAT exceeded the PDS file name length limit (27.3 format). Renamed to: DATA/ODF/MESS_RS_08079_1940_10P1_ODF.DAT. Label manually edited to correct this. 4. DATA/ODF/*.LBL: Many of the MISSION_PHASE_NAME values given in the ODF product labels are incorrect. They all have values of MERCURY 1 FLYBY. Products covering 2008-01-29 to 2008-09-21 should have MERCURY 2 CRUISE, products covering 2008-09-22 to 2008-10-20 should have MERCURY 2 FLYBY. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 3 RELEASE DATE: 2008-07-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2007-06-21 to 2008-01-28 (Mercury 1 Cruise, Mercury 1 Flyby ) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: RS EDR PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None. 1. Notes: Initial delivery. No known errors or variances. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 1 RELEASE DATE: n/a DATA COVERAGE: Pre-flight ground calibration data Notes: The RS archive did not have deliverables in Release 1. ******** SECTION B ******** This section is provided for general notes concerning the archive as a whole. 1. PRODUCT_VERSION_ID was added to the PDS labels for all data products included with or re-delivered with PDS Release 5. Newly delivered products have 1.0 as the value of this field and redelivered products 2.0 or higher. 2. ANCILLARY/LTF/ - All files. The one-way light time (OWLT) files have a time string in the first column of the data portion of the file that is not enclosed in double quotes. This product is not produced by the MESSENGER SOC team and follows a standard format for data products of this type. To change it for PDS standards might require users with existing tools to modify their tools. 3. ANCILLARY/ION/ - All files. The lengths of some lines in the ionospheric product text files exceed the PDS-limit of 80 characters including EOL. These are are a standard data product produced and provided by JPL and the DSMS. Reformatting them to comply with the 80 character limit would render them unusable by existing programs that expect this format. 4. ANCILLARY/TRO/ - All files. The lengths of some lines in the tropospheric products text file exceed the PDS-limit of 80 characters including EOL. These are are a standard data product produced and provided by JPL and the DSMS. Reformatting them to comply with the 80 character limit would render them unusable by existing programs that expect this format.
