Fluvial conglomerate (coin for reference). Note the great variability in grain size. All conglomerate materials are rounded, vesiculated, and generally dark gray in color. High-level Description: Interstitial, unconsolidated grains from Unit 1, a clast-supported fluvial conglomerate. Interstitial grains range from 0.2-0.42 mm in diameter, are sub-angular to sub-rounded, and display a rough texture. a small percentage of grains are vesicular. Palagonitized fines mantle many grains (image 0803). Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Rough, dark, sub-angular to sub-rounded grains. Grain size and sorting: Poorly-sorted sub-mm sized (0.2-0.42 mm) tephra grains in a clast-supported matrix. No preferred orientation. Grain fabric: Polymodal at the microscale; bimodal (mm-scale and cm-scale particles) at the macroscale. Sediment structure: None. Color: Predominantly dark and light-grey grains, with some black and white, and a few red grains.
