Unit 3 (reference, Deschutes_Formation_strat.jpg). Ignimbrite.

High-level Description: Ash lens in Unit 3, a friable, poorly-welded,
ashy-matrixed ignimbrite with lithics entrained. Ash lens is approximately 2
cm wide, varying, and cuts across the ignimbrite unit nearly vertically. The
lens fractures in smooth, slightly concave sheets sub-parallel to the long
axis of the lens. The lens is composed of sub-resolution (<0.01 mm diameter)
grains, tan in color. At the height of the image, the lens extends a few mm
into the ignimbrite unit.

Texture
  Grain morphology and appearance: Grains are sub-resolution.
  Grain size and sorting: Grains are sub-resolution. No apparent preferred
orientation.
  Grain fabric:  Unimodal.

Sediment structure:  None.

Color:  Tan.
