Massive lahar with some discrete layering. Sequence from bottom to top displays poorly-sorted layers, massive unit, oxidized layers, crossbeds and vesicular sequence. High-level Description: Coarse/fine-grained, layered sequence lying on the bottom layer of Unit 4. Sequences is definitively layered, as compared to the sequence below. Grains up to 10 cm across occur within coarse-grained layers (image 0871). Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Rough, rubbly, sub-angular to sub-round tephra grains layered in a coarse- (images 0868-0871) to fine-grained (images 0872-3) alternating sequence. Grain size and sorting: Poorly-sorted alternating coarse- to fine-grained layers, with fine grains averaging 0.2 mm and coarse grains averaging 0.8 mm in diameter. Larger lithics (up to 10 cm) occur in the coarse-grained layers. Grain fabric: Polymodal. Sediment structure: Parallel lamination. Color: Black and buff grains, with some white and a few red grains mixed.
