PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Highly crystaline plagioclastic phyric basalt clast thrown out from Hole-in-the-Ground maar. Clean rock face reveals dense array of irregularly shaped plagioclastic crystals up to 1-2 cm across in a fine-grained matrix (averaging 0.19 mm). Sample has the texture of basalt and random distribution of plagioclaise crystals. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Irregular, bladed, very-angular plagioclaise crystals grown in a finer-grained basaltic matrix. Grain size and sorting: Smaller basaltic grains (0.19 mm diameter) support bladed plagioclaise crystals 1-2 cm in diameter. No sorting evident. Grain fabric: Random orientation; bimodal. Sediment structure: None. Color: Black, dark and light grey matrix with white plagioclase grains.
