High-level Description: Unit 1 at the bottom of the layered sequence. Mostly
composed of fairly large accretionary and non-accretionary lapilli averaging
~5 mm (some are as small as ~1 mm).  Clasts are sub-rounded and have a light
grey gritty surface. Clasts fit together tightly. 90% juvenile material.

Texture
  Grain morphology and appearance: Very angular to sub-angular, sub-spherical,
grains in a clast-supported matrix.
  Grain size and sorting: Poorly-sorted clasts averaging 5 mm diameter
  Grain fabric:  Random orientation.

Sediment structure:  None evident.

Color:  Black to grey.
