PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Unit 2. Similar to Unit 1, comprised of smaller accretionary lapilli (~2 mm) and coarse (3 cm) to fining-upwards (1 mm) blocky angular to sub-angular grains. Accretionary lapilli are sub-rounded to sub-angular and are light grey and composed of gritty ash. Other lapillus-sized clasts are less uniformly-shaped than in Unit 1, with most lapilli irregular, not spherical. Non-accretionary lapilli are larger (about 5 mm) and are white with smooth surfaces. There is no visible layering at this scale, and accretionary and non-accretionary lapilli are evenly distributed, with 80% of lapilli being accretionary. This layer also has an ashy matrix, although it is still clast-supported. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Very angular to sub-angular grains mixed with sub-spherical accretionary lapilli in a clast-supported matrix. Grain size and sorting: Well-sorted, fining-upwards clasts 1 mm-3 cm diameter Grain fabric: Random orientation. Sediment structure: None evident. Color: Black to grey.
