PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Unit 13; coarse (2 mm)-to-fine (fine ash) laminated layer with variations in laminae, cross-bedded down-section. Finely laminated ash and accretionary lapilli sequence. From the bottom to the top of the sequence there are four clear fining-upward sequences, with various other layers between them. The first layer, on the bottom, is large accretionary lapilli (~6 mm). The rest of the layer is ash, although it varies upward from coarse to fine. Coarse ash is ~0.5 mm in diameter, and fine ash is ~0.1 mm in diameter. Ash is angular to sub angular, light grey, and glassy. Photo scale is 50 microns per pixel. Cross beds between Units 13 and 14 are defined by differences in clast size; there are fine ash layers and non-accretionary lapilli layers with larger clasts (~8 mm). Ash layers are finely laminated with layers on the order of 2 mm. Clasts are sub-rounded to rounded, and are white or tan and glassy. Cross beds are about 8 cm thick. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Dark grey granular-textured accretionary lapilli in a light grey, glassy, angular to sub-angular ash. Grain size and sorting: Well-sorted, fining-upward ash 0.1-0.5 mm in size supporting ~6 mm diameter accretionary lapilli. Grain fabric: Random orientation. Sediment structure: Parallel and cross-bedded lamination. Color: Grey with a few light tan/white grains.
