PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Lithified ash float in layer 6, comprised of three types of grains: Large, light-brown accretionary lapilli, smaller, round, black to dark-brown, glassy clasts, and very fine grey to light-brown ash. Lapilli are 1 mm in diameter and have gritty surfaces. Glass droplets are spherical to tear-drop shaped and about 0.5 mm in diameter, and fine ash is about 0.1 mm and irregularly-shaped. Most particles have generally smooth surfaces with only minor amounts of fractured surfaces. There is some layering visible at this scale, with a lapilli-rich layer (~1c m) sandwiched between two lapilli-free layers. In the lapilli-rich layer, about 30% of the ash is lapilli, 50% is glass, and 20% is fine ash, and in the other layers 20% is glass and 80% is fine ash. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Three types of grains: Large, light-brown gritty-textured accretionary lapilli, smaller, round, black to dark-brown, glassy clasts, and very fine grey to light-brown ash. In the lapilli-rich layer, about 30% of the ash is lapilli, 50% is glass, and 20% is fine ash, and in the other layers 20% is glass and 80% is fine ash. Grain size and sorting: Accretionary lapilli are 1 mm in diameter; glass droplets are 0.5 mm across and ash is ~0.1 mm in diameter. Layers are homogeneous in grain size. There is some layering visible at this scale, with a lapilli-rich layer (~1c m) sandwiched between two lapilli-free layers, but there is no other apparent sorting. Grain fabric: None. Sediment structure: Parallel lamination. Color: Black, light-to dark-brown and grey grains.
