PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Proximal scoria sample. Clast is 10 cm in diameter. Scoria is vesicular, with some fragments stretched and broken. Gradations appear in vesicular density and shape, with smaller vesicles near the edge of the clast and larger ones are near the center. Vesicle sizes are not evenly-distributed. Clast exterior is ropey/glassy and nonvesicular. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Grey, glassy, very angular vesicular clast 10 cm long axis. Vesicle size and density vary throughout the interior of the clast; the exterior is ropey in texture, with no vesicles. Grain size and sorting: No individual grains.. Grain fabric: No individual grains can be seen. Sediment structure: None. Color: Grey. Comparison: Compare to images 3775-3778 where scoria are non-vitric, crystalline but with no phenocrysts, displaying a low level of vesicularity. Compare to proximal Kilauea Iki deposit in images 3845-3866, where morphology is more frothy and les vitric, clast sizes are more mixed (sub-mm to 10 cm) and exteriors are less glassy. Additionally, the proximal deposit has a bimodal vesicle distribution (large/small).
