Scoria layer 6 cm thick, comprised of angular, sub-mm to 5 mm diameter grains, most averaging 2-3 mm across. Layer is finely laminated, but coarser near the top of the layer. Layer is predominantly grey, with larger buff grains. Opalized detritus is also present. Layer is similar to Unit 7, but buff grains are smaller. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Angular to sub-rounded grey scoria grains mixed with larger buff grains and olivine crystals. Texture is rough and rubbly. Grain size and sorting: Grains are poorly-sorted, and sub-mm to 5 mm diameter, averaging 2-3 mm. Grain fabric: Random orientation. Sediment structure: Parallel lamination. Color: Grey and buff with some clear-green olivine.
