High-level Description: Unit 12. Coarse-grained surge layer. Cross bed pinches
(weathers out) from 9 cm to <1 cm thick. Layer is comprised of red, black and
buff clasts 0.3-1 mm across (average 0.6 mm), along with 10% abraded olivine.

Texture
  Grain morphology and appearance: Small, angular to sub-rounded grey grains
in a clast-supported matrix, cross-bedded. Texture is rough and grainy; some
texture may be due to the presence of sub-resolution ash grains. Some olivine
grains are present.
  Grain size and sorting:  Poorly-sorted; 0.3-1 mm diameter grains, averaging
about 0.6 mm across.
  Grain fabric:  Random orientation.

Sediment structure: Cross-bedded lamination.

Color:  Black, buff, red and green-clear grains.
