Draping mixed, lithified tephra. Abundant primary scoria (well-cemented, poorly-sorted) and larger, blocky lithic clasts (15-20%) with less coarse ash interstitial (img 3949, 3950). Grain supported blocks and bombs are also present. Juvenile fragments were plastic when deposited. Small vesicles throughout. Coarse draping scoria overlies this unit, at an unconformity (3947, 3948). Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Varied basalt scoria grains in a clast-supported matrix (img 3951, 3952). Most grains are angular to sub-angular and very rough-textured. Some show textural evidence of plasticity during emplacement. Tan finer grains are interstitial. Grain size and sorting: Poorly-sorted; grain sizes range from 2-10 mm, averaging 5 mm. Some grains are as large as 5 cm. Grain fabric: Random orientation. Sediment structure: Parallel and cross-bedded lamination. Color: Black and buff scoria grains, with a few red and green-clear grains. Less coarse grains are tan.
