Skeidararsandur, Iceland is the site of a jokulhaup (subglacial outburst
flood) occurring in 1996, which broke through the older glacial moraine and
covered 5000 square meters before reaching the ocean. The outwash plain is
characterized by angular to sub-rounded clasts scattered throughout the plain.
Larger blocks cluster along hills, while smaller clasts are found in
lower-lying areas. Clast size decreases with distance from the base of the
glacier. As of the 2008 field season, macroplant life was scarce at the
surface, but it required digging 0.5 m down to pass all roots and the strong
smell of hummus.
