Floor bed is 50-70% pebble-sized or larger particles, approximately 15% particles 50 cm or larger. Within the flowbed, fragments range from sand-sized to 2 m blocks, with the majority of cobble-to-boulder-sized blocks in the 10-50 cm range. Basement pebbles are 1-3 cm, averaging 1.75 cm in diameter, and cover the ground, anchoring underlying finer-grained material. Presumably surface finer-grained material was mobilized by wind and winnowed out like a desert pavement, transported downstream. "Hills" contain more friable fragments, including hyaloclastites with lithics entrained (10-15% by volume). Additionally, "hill" surface materials are larger; 50-70% by volume are 5-20 cm in diameter with smaller clasts interstitially placed. By contrast, friables and hyaloclastites are absent from the flowbed floor. Composition is 95% basalt. Broken fragments are common throughout the region. Samples are taken from the bottom of the trench, to avoid contamination with organics.
