PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2009-11-15 NOTE = "Sample description" END_OBJECT = TEXT END High-level Description: Trench tailings in natural lighting conditions. Sub-angular to sub-rounded, poorly-sorted unconsolidated fragments, sub-resolution to 5 mm in size. Blocky basalt grains dominate. Reflectance is very high in natural light due to high water content. Texture Grain morphology and appearance: Sub-rounded; grains are dull and blocky, texture is relatively smooth. Grain size and sorting: Very fine sand (sub-resolution) up to fine pebbles; very poorly sorted. Average resolvable grain size is 460 microns across. Grain fabric: Random orientation. Sediment structure: none. Color: Mix of dark grey or black grains and white/tan and reddish grains. Percentage is difficult to determine because of the high reflectivity of the grains.
