Skeidararsandur plain

Downstream along Skeidararsandur, 2 km from (SS-4), between Gisjukvisl and
Haoldukvisl, 63 degrees N54.343, 17 degrees W16.729. elevation 180 ft.

Surface particles are small (2-10 mm, average 5 mm across); the biggest are 5
cm in diameter. The majority of surface particles are sub-angular to
sub-rounded coarse pebbles to small cobbles. These anchor the underlying
finer-grained material. Finer-grained material was likely mobilized by wind
and winnowed out like a desert pavement, transported further downstream.
Composition is 95-97% basalt. Blocky cobbles predominate. Land is flat, with
the few swells 10-20 cm tall, with the largest up to 0.5 m high. Sea grass in
spots, anchoring dunes. Mini-dunes (1-2 cm high) are visible in the distance,
parallel to the shore.

Samples are taken from the bottom of the trench, to avoid contamination with
organics.
