Skeidararsandur plain

Downstream along Skeidararsandur, 3 km from (SS-5), between Gisjukvisl and
Haoldukvisl, 63 degrees N52.812, 17 degrees W17.509. elevation 124 ft.

Surface is wet; soil can be clumped together by squeezing. Particles are small
(2-10 mm, average 5 mm across); the few biggest are 5 cm in diameter. The
majority of surface particles are sub-angular to sub-rounded coarse pebbles to
small cobbles. These anchor the underlying finer-grained material.
Finer-grained material was likely mobilized by wind and winnowed out like a
desert pavement, transported further downstream. Composition is 95-97% basalt.
Blocky cobbles predominate. Land is flat, with the few swells averaging 10-20
cm tall. Sea grass occurs between dunes.

Samples are taken from the bottom of the trench, to avoid contamination with
organics.
