Skeidararsandur plain

Downstream along Skeidararsandur, 3 km from (SS-6), between Gisjukvisl and
Haoldukvisl, 63 degrees N51.323, 17 degrees W17.640. elevation 97 ft.

Quicksand-like conditions because of the preponderance of very fine-grained
particles and high water content of the soil. Large particles (10 cm or
larger) are absent. Small particles (5-10 mm) cover 10-15% of the surface
rather than blanketing the surface as a pavement. These surface particles are
sub-angular to sub-rounded fine to coarse pebbles. Composition is 97-99%
basalt. Dunes are prevalent and trend perpendicular to the prevailing wind
direction.

Samples are taken from the bottom of the trench, to avoid contamination with
organics.
