Skeidararsandur plain

Downstream along Skeidararsandur, 3-5 km from (SS-7), between Gisjukvisl and
Haoldukvisl, 63 degrees N49.254, 17 degrees W17.158. elevation 56 ft.

Quicksand-like conditions because of the preponderance of very fine-grained
particles and high water content of the soil (but less than site SS-7). Large
particles (10 cm or larger) are absent. Small particles (5-10 mm) lie only on
dunes, covering 20-30% of the surface, possibly serving as an anchor for
finer-grained particles. These 1-5 mm surface particles are sub- fine to
coarse pebbles. Composition is 97-99% basalt. Sea grass predominates.

Samples are taken from the bottom of the trench, to avoid contamination with
organics.
