<description>This file contains empirical scattering functions derived from sorted RCP
and LCP echoes obtained during Revolution 233 (also known as Orbit 234)
of the Clementine bistatic radar experiment.

Sorting was accomplished by identifying 72 'target' points on the lunar
surface for which the instantaneous bistatic angle (BETA) was zero. The
targets were separated by one second in time and covered the last 72
seconds when such points could be defined on the surface. The last point
(TARGET=72) satisfied BETA=0 at 1994-04-09T18:46:43 Earth Receive Time
(ERT), 6.5 seconds after the BETA=0 point passed closest to the South Pole.

RCP and LCP echo powers were sorted according to their target number and
according to the bistatic angle BETA at the target point when the
measurement was made. The target number (TARGET) was based on the
frequency of the measured value relative to a hypothetical echo from the
South Pole. If the frequency of one of the 72 targets matched the
frequency of the measurement, its number was assigned to the measurement
and the bistatic angle (BETA) at the target at the measurement time became
the second sorting index. Sorting according to BETA was limited to 101
bins with center values -5.0, -4.9, ..., +5.0. Measurements for which no
target could be matched or for which ABS(BETA) was larger than 5 were
discarded. Since sorting depended only on geometry, the same (TARGET,BETA)
assignment applied to both RCP and LCP values.

Inputs to the sorting procedure were 1464 1024-point power spectra in RCP
and LCP (files RCP.IMG and LCP.IMG, respectively, in this archive). The
sorted output files are SRTPWRR.TAB and SRTPWRL.TAB; the table giving the
number of points at each (BETA,TARGET) is SRTNPWR.TAB. The values were
radiometrically calibrated to units of watts/Hz in both channels; but no
attempt was made to adjust the calibrated values for variable antenna gain,
scattering function, or surface area at each frequency or as a function of
 location on the surface.

Column 1 in this table gives the steps into which BETA values were sorted
(-5 to +5 in increments of 0.1 degrees). Negative BETA values denote
measurements prior to BETA=0 at the target. Column 2 gives the ratio of
the average RCP value to the average LCP value for 13 targets poleward of
about 88 S latitude (targets 58-70). Column 3 gives the median of
individual RCP/LCP ratios for the same 13 targets.</description>
