     COMMENTS ON MER 1 AND 2 PANCAM IOF ARCHIVES

1. Data sets MER1-M-PANCAM-3-IOFCAL-SCI-V2.0 and 
MER2-M-PANCAM-3-IOFCAL-SCI-V2.0 contain IOF
Pancam images generated using new calibration data and procedures.
The new calibration details are described in a document in the DOCUMENT
directory. IOF is an acronym for the measured scene radiance divided by the
solar irradiance at the top of the Mars atmosphere.

2. The attached PDS3 labels of Pancam images may occasionally contain
statements with nonstandard syntax that PDS3 validation software reports as
invalid. The following list gives examples of such statements.

a. ORIGIN_ROTATION_QUATERNION
The value "-inf.0" is not recognized. The value inf.0 is not recognized. None
of the values should be quoted.

b. A value of nan.0 occurs on occasion. It is not a recognized value.

c. The RELEASE_ID value is missing in about 8000 labels in the sol range of
1200 to 1399. The value has a set of double quotes without any value.

d. PDS3 required values to be all upper case. The value for
PRODUCER_INSTITUTION_NAME appears as title case.
