I was delayed in reporting initial results by travel which followed immediately after the experiment. The attached JPEG shows four 180-second average power spectra from the X-Band left-circularly polarized receiver at DSS 63. The narrow signal on the right is a residual carrier being radiated via a MEX HGA sidelobe. The broad, drifting signal on the left is the surface echo. Structure on the echo signal presumably comes from variations in the scattering properties of the reflecting surface. The X-RCP echo is comparably strong, so we should have little trouble extracting estimates of surface dielectric constant from these data. There were S-RCP and S-LCP echoes detected in real time throughout the one-hour observation; they are weaker, but there is no reason to believe we won't be able to compare the dielectric constant at the two wavelengths. We have transferred all of the 2008/025 BSR data to Stanford and have begun our preliminary processing. The next experiment will be Saturday local time and the third will be about a week later. Even though it had been nearly two years since we last performed a MEX BSR at DSS 63 there were only minor operational issues. I am optimistic that the next two experiments will go equally well and that we will have the best specular track data yet from the MEX mission. Thanks to all who contributed to this success. Jesse: During the real-time monitoring, the X-RCP noise level seemed to wander more than it should have. If the weather had been bad, I would have expected similar behavior on X-LCP; but all three of the other channels were stable. Another possibility is that the X-R noise diode wasn't turned on and off the way it should have. I won't really be able to pin this down until after I've completed the preliminary processing. I'm hoping that we have more than enough calibration data to back out any anomalies -- if they really are present in the data. The other minor issue was the voice link. The conference call worked well; but it was different. The hand-off to DSS 15 caused some minor conflicts, especially when 15 went red and had to be replaced by 26. I'll let you know if I find anything that needs your attention regarding the noise X-RCP noise calibration. You are probably already aware of the voice line problem. Overall, this was one of the most trouble-free experiments I've seen. So please consider my characterization of "minor" as a compliment; Greg and the station really did a nice job. Getting back to MEX BSR so smoothly was unexpectedly pleasant. I'm looking forward to the next two. Let me know if you need anything from us. I'm not sure I'd even do that. We were in the middle of our post-cal, when we're changing configurations every 3 minutes. At the same time DSS 15 and MEX MOP were trying to decide whether to transfer operations to DSS 26; and then DSS 26 came on the line. That was an unusual situation; but even then there was sufficient time for everyone to use the line. It just meant that we sometimes had to wait while the other traffic cleared. If we had also been trying to troubleshoot, it might have been less pleasant. But nothing was lost. If there are lots of unused lines, then maybe moving DSS 24 somewhere else is practical and there's no additional cost. I'm OK with sharing in hopes that we don't all crash at the same time. And it may be easier for MEX MOP to monitor a single line. Your call; I'm just saying it was a little annoying but not an experiment breaker by any means. Thanks, Dick
