Because the spacecraft was one-way, the signal drifted much more than during a "normal" occultation observation. During ingress the X-Band carrier drifted from about 200 Hz to about 550 Hz below the passband center frequency. At egress the signal was about 800 Hz below the center and it drifted to about 850 Hz below. Although the magnitude of the drift was less on egress, the offset placed the X-Band carrier in the roll-off region of the receiver filter. During ingress the spacecraft high-gain antenna (HGA) pointed toward Earth and the signal strength only varied because of the occultation. Immediately after egress, the HGA began tracking the specular point. As a result, the signal amplitude (and probably phase) depended more on the offset of the boresight from the Earth direction than on the properties of the neutral atmosphere and ionosphere. The egress data would be much more difficult to process for occultation science than the ingress data. The data appear to be good otherwise.
