The controller for S-Band failed to turn on the S-RCP noise diode at the expected time during the pre-cal; several steps in the procedure were repeated, but no reboot was required. Goltz and Kahan reported unexpected real-time noise power increases when the ambient loads were connected, especially at S-Band. The quick-look processing at Stanford shows no such anomalous behavior except that the S-RCP noise power started high during the post-cal and decreased about 0.5 dB during the first 8 minutes with the ambient load attached. This is very unexpected; the ambient load measurements during pre-cal and post-cal are usually the most stable during the entire operation. The S-RCP power had also been fluctuating about +/-0.2 dB over the previous half hour when the antenna was tracking Mars. Shortly after S-LCP MINICAL #2 the noise power began to decrease. The final value was about 2.5 dB lower at 20:50:30, after which it quickly recovered. There was another decrease of about 2 dB, with the maximum drop at about 21:08. These are both reminiscent of drops on days 106 and 135, both also at DSS 63 on S-LCP, suggesting that the S-LCP has episodes lasting typically 5 minutes when the maser gain decreases slowly until it has lost about 2.5 dB, at which point it bounces back to normal within a minutes or so. For the first time in memory, BSR data from an RSR were corrupted before the files reached Stanford ... and it happened twice during this experiment. One second of 25 kHz S-LCP data (4 RSR records) was lost starting at 21:02:01 and one second of 25 kHz X-LCP data (4 RSR records) was lost starting at 21:15:33. Danny Kahan tried several times to play these data back to JPL and was not successful; he did manage to isolate the problem to each of the four record intervals noted above. At Stanford, we adapted existing software to copy and edit existing records so that the record sequence number and SFDU seconds in the RSR headers were continuous; the fabricated records were then inserted into the gaps. Quick-look processing was successful and there are no obvious artifacts in the output. The cause of the corruption is not known.
