PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1996-10-16 NOTE = "Description of contents of DOCUMENT directory" END_OBJECT = TEXT END The DOCUMENT directory holds PDS Documentation files. Documents are in plain unmarked ASCII text or in PostScript formats. Most have detached PDS labels (*.LBL file names); a few have attached PDS labels. Files in the DOCUMENT directory are the following: Experiment and Data Descriptions: The PDS detached label DESC_AAA.LBL defines the Experiment Description Document. The label has 80-byte FIXED_LENGTH records delimited by carriage- return line-feed pairs. It points toward an ASCII text file DESC_TXT.ASC which describes the background, procedures, and early results from the experiments. It also points toward an Encapsulated PostScript document containing six files (figures) and to a PostScript Version 1 (black and white) document which contains the same figures. For each experiment there is a detached label yydddAAA.LBL defining the Experiment Report Document for observations conducted on year 'yy' and day- of-year 'ddd'. The label is an ASCII file with 80-byte FIXED_LENGTH records, each delimited by a carriage-return line-feed pair. Each label points toward an ASCII document consisting of one or more ASCII files and up to two PostScript documents containing figures and/or scanned documents. For experiments conducted in 1993 the figures and scanned documents appear in both encapsulated PostScript and PostScript Version 1 (black and white) formats. For experiments conducted in 1994 there are no figures or scanned documents. The DOCUMENT directory contains an Experiment Report Document for each experiment included in the archival volume. Ephemerides: NAIF software and data modules were used to convey information on the spacecraft orbit and motions of the planets. The file TK_FTP.TXT explains how to obtain more information, including the NAIF software toolkit over Internet. TK_DESCR.TXT describes the Toolkit, and TK_INSTL.TXT provides guidance on installing the NAIF software on a variety of computer systems. The NAIF Toolkit evolves, but NAIF attempts to keep capabilities backwardly compatible. So obtaining information on the latest version of the Toolkit via FTP is preferable to providing a fixed version of the Toolkit with each archival volume. Quaternions: QTERNION.TXT describes the format, content, and use of Magellan bistatic radar quaternion polynomial coefficient (QPC) files. It is an ASCII file with 80-byte FIXED_LENGTH records, each of which is delimited by a carriage-return line-feed pair. A PDS attached label is prepended to the file. Link Monitor and Control Log: LMC.TXT describes the format and content of the Link Monitor and Control Logs. It is an ASCII file with 80-byte FIXED_LENGTH records, each of which is delimited by a carriage-return line-feed pair. A PDS attached label is prepended to the file. Software Interface Specifications: RSC11_11.TXT is the Software Interface Specification (SIS) for each Original Data Record (ODR) file. The ODR is the primary data type for Magellan bistatic radar observations. The SIS is a complete description of the format and content of the ODR. The same information is conveyed in the detached PDS label that accompanies each ODR file. TRK_2_25.TXT is the SIS for the (backup and ancillary) Archival Tracking Data File (ATDF). It provides a complete description of the format and contents of each ATDF. The same information is conveyed in the detached PDS label that accompanies each ATDF. MGBSRSIS.TXT is the SIS for the Magellan bistatic radar raw data archive -- this product. It provides a complete description of the format and contents of the archival data set. File Dependency Table: FILELIST.TAB is a PDS TABLE object which relates ancillary files to each ODR. ODRs are identified by their start/stop times; for each ODR the following information (if known) is provided by the table: DSN pass number DSN antenna number ODR start time ODR stop time Magellan mapping cycle Orbit number File size (records) DSP mode Receiver channel assignments (to ADCs) Sample rate Receiver filter bandwidth Record size (bytes) Corresponding ATDF file name (if any) Ephemeris files needed for analysis (up to 2) Quaternion file needed for analysis Link Monitor and Control file name A detached PDS label FILELIST.LBL completely describes the format and content of the table. Values will be added to empty fields as the archiving progresses; the version of FILELIST.TAB on the final CD-WO volume should be the most nearly complete.
