Magellan MIDR Restoration Release Notes Users are encouraged to provide comments to the PDS Geosciences Node if errors are found either in data or in documentation in this archive. Please send comments by e-mail to the PDS Geosciences Node at geosci@wunder.wustl.edu This document contains processing notes and errata concerning the restoration of the original PDS Magellan MIDR (Mosaic Image Data Record) dataset that was released on CD-ROM by the Magellan Project. The original small image frames have been mosaicked together and PDS4 labels generated. Notes are grouped by the original CD-ROM volume_id because the PDS4 mosaics were generated in the order of the CD-ROM volumes. 1. MG_0003 The F-MIDR products, F50S345, F55N337, F60N334, F65N330 and F75N332, on CD-ROM MG_0003 are the standard product replacements for five of the engineering test product on MG_0001. The replacement products have version_ids of 2 indicating the data were acquired in Mapping Cycle 1 and the products are a second version. 2. MG_0012 For product c1midr_60n014_1 there were 6656 pixels with values of 0 in the new mosaic that should have been non-zero. The following comment was listed on the original CD-ROM: Framelet 56 for C1-MIDR 60N014 has zeros in approximately 6.5 records starting at line 605 sample 513 and continuing to line 611 sample 1024. This will result in a horizontal black band across the framelet and may cause problems with some automated processing algorithms. 3. MG_0014 For product c1midr_00n009_1 there were 7168 pixels with values of 0 in the new mosaic that should have been non-zero. The following comment was listed on the original CD-ROM: Framelet 36 for C1-MIDR 00N009 has zeros in approximately 7 records starting at line 316 sample 513 and continuing to line 323 sample 512. This will result in a horizontal black band across the framelet and may cause problems with some automated processing algorithms. 4. MG_0015 For product fmidr_20n097_1 there were 6144 pixels with values of 0 in the new mosaic that should have been non-zero. The following comment was listed on the original CD-ROM: Framelet 22 for F- MIDR 20N097 has zeros in approximately 6 records starting at line 360 sample 513 and continuing to line 366 sample 512. This will result in a horizontal black band across the framelet and may cause problems with some automated processing algorithms. 5. Product version ID for Cycle 2 and above With the advent of cycle 2 data on volume MG_0053, it was decided to alter the format and meaning of version IDs. If the version ID has a single digit, the product is a cycle 1 product. In this case, a higher version ID means an improved version of the same product. For mapping cycle 2 and 3, the version ID format is: CVV where C is the cycle number and vv is a "version" number. However, in this case the version ID does NOT necessarily refer to an improved version of the same product. It may mean that this is a completely different type of MIDR product at this latitude and longitude. For example, version ID 202 may be a right looking image from cycle 2 whereas version ID 201 is a left looking one. 6. MG_0060 Product c1midr_45n329_2 has a number of what appear to be repeating image strips. Framelet 21 from the original cd-rom has this defect.
