Below is a brief description from a status report. I am faxing some plots that Stan made of the signal. ETT = Experimental Tone Tracker at DSS 13 Pc/No for KaBLE during this test = 61.5 dB-Hz -Trish ------------------------- Ka-Band Link Experiment on Mars Global Surveyor (MGS/KaBLE-II) A very strong Ka-band signal from the Mars Global Surveyor was received and tracked by DSS 13 on January 2, 1997, between 7:00-9:00 AM PST. This pass was scheduled during a time when Earth was expected to pass within 0.1 deg of the MGS high-gain antenna (HGA) boresight. Preliminary data indicate that the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) at Ka-band from MGS toward Earth was about 74 dBm, consistent with the 76 dBm MGS Ka-band EIRP (measured prior to launch) and a 1.5 dB pointing loss expected for the 0.1 deg spacecraft pointing offset. The seven-element Ka-band Array Feed was used to receive the MGS signal and point the DSS 13 34m ground antenna with millidegree precision. Additional Ka-band passes will commence after January 14th, when MGS Outer Cruise begins and the spacecraft will maintain continuous HGA pointing towards Earth.
