Cause is unknown. Joe Twicken forwarded the following (slightly edited) message from Bill Adams regarding signals sweeping through the occultation passband. These have been observed previously; but, since there have not been regular egress occultation measurements in the past year, it has been a long time since we've seen them regularly. They have been present on virtually every egress occultation since the end of Beta supplement operations. At roughly 5 minutes after egress, they do not pose any problem to analysis of the occultation data. I received a voice mail from Jesse Glance regarding a broadband frequency artifact occurring about five minutes after egress. This is almost certainly the uplink sweep getting turned around by the ranging channel. Jesse said that a notable exception was 173/02:22; this was the last egress over DSS 65, and no uplink was scheduled due to the station interlock limit. A typical orbit egress will have an uplink hitting the spacecraft at approximately 3 minutes and 45 seconds after exit occultation. The sweep lasts 1 minute and 25 seconds, which puts the end-of-tune at 5 minutes and 10 seconds after egress. Example, first uplink of the sequence 2001-172/06:41:56 should be visible in the downlink starting at 06:49:25, which is 3 minutes and 45 seconds after EOCCSE. This is a rough figure, because some of our uplink times are controlled by station limitations and not our orbit. For instance, the uplink on DOY 172/10:40:00 is seen in the downlink starting at 10:47:29, which is 6 minutes and 11 seconds after egress. The uplink sweep starts approximately 6 kHz above BLF and sweeps to 6 kHz below and back up to BLF again. All at 256 Hz per second. When we saw this in 1999-070 (plot from Dick Simpson on file), there were a pair of little spurs that started showing up about 700 Hz above and below the downlink carrier. They moved together towards the carrier and then disappeared into it about a minute later. I would expect the same now, only it should take less time, I think. So.... This will be there sometimes and sometimes not, depending on when and if the uplink was scheduled. See below for uplink times and the associated change to 2-way frequency, which is the time the uplink can start to appear near the downlink carrier. The "artifact" should be gone by 1 minute and 25 seconds after the Acq D/L 2-Way time. ! 094 25 00022 172 064155 TRK D25 ACQ U/L, X/CH. 16, 4.0KW/LOW, , MAQ ! 094 25 00043 172 065155 TRK D25 ACQ D/L, 2-WAY, X/CH. 16 ! 094 25 00080 172 083945 TRK D25 ACQ U/L, X/CH. 16, 4.0KW/LOW, , MAQ ! 094 25 00101 172 084944 TRK D25 ACQ D/L, 2-WAY, X/CH. 16 ! 094 45 00158 172 104000 TRK D45 ACQ U/L, X/CH. 16, 20.0KW/LOW, , MAQ ! 094 45 00197 172 104733 TRK D45 ACQ D/L, 2-WAY, X/CH. 16 ! 094 45 00241 172 123521 TRK D45 ACQ U/L, X/CH. 16, 20.0KW/LOW, , MAQ ...
