During the past 24 hrs, the impact has decreased from a 2 dB reduction in carrier power at surface occultation to 1 dB. This takes place over the last 15 s before the signal is extinguished by the surface. All ingress occultations between 12669i (DSS 63, start time 2002/007-12:11:00) and 12681i (DSS 34, start time 2002/008-11:44:00) are affected, with the spacing between ingress occultations being about 117 min. All data collected using DSS 63 have spurs at +/-30 Hz and +/-180 Hz from the carrier. Data from occultation 12681i (DSS 34, start time 2002/008-11:44:00) have fluctuations in carrier level of +/-0.5 dB. There are many possible explanations, but it appears that surface echoes prior to ingress occultations are more common and stronger than surface echoes after egress occultations. In the list above, there are 9 ingress occultations and 8 egress occultations. 7 of 9 in the first case and 4 of 8 in the second had visible echoes in quick-look processing plots. 4 of the strongest 6 were ingress.
