However, the SNR remains about 2 dB low, presumably because the station has substituted a HEMPT front end for the normal laser. Data collected from DSS 45 occultation 13218i (start time 2002/052- 09:30:00) had +/-0.5 dB random fluctuations in the free-space carrier amplitude. The following occultation was collected at two different antennas: Occultation Start Date/Time DSS #1 DSS #2 ----------- ----------------- ------ ------ 13226i 2002/053-01:12:00 25 15 Analysis -------- Several weeks ago Dave Hinson noticed artifacts in atmospheric profiles derived from data collected in late January 2001. The problem was eventually traced to a repositioning of the HGA immediately after ingress. Dave's HGA reconstruction achieves a smooth motion by interpolating among several samples of gimbal angles spaced by 32 seconds. When the HGA moves too soon after ingress, it's motion 'leaks' into the reconstruction a minute or more before the actual activity begins. The Radio Science Team has begun preparing an MCR to move the HGA activity later in the occultation period. Today Sami Asmar reported that Steve Odiorne (LMA) has agreed to move the 'transmitter off' time to two minutes after ingress occultation. This change would be effective with sequence mm160 which begins 14 March. Hinson has since talked to Odiorne and discovered that only the transmitter cycle would be affected by this change; the HGA motion is driven by obstruction avoidance and it may not be possible to change the HGA timing.
