Since the spacecraft is hidden from view, these are presumed to result from unknown configuration changes in the ground station. Magnitude and timing are approximate. They are: Occn Start Date/Time DSS Noise Change Secs After Ingress ------ ----------------- --- ------------ ------------------ 13598i 2002/083-11:11:00 54 +1.0 dB 90 13604i 2002/083-22:58:00 25 -0.5 dB 60 13639i 2002/086-19:39:00 65 -1.0 dB 60 13641i 2002/086-23:34:00 15 +1.0 dB 30 13646i 2002/087-09:23:00 54 +1.0 dB 20 Data from occultations 13613i, 13614i, and 13615i (DSS 15, start times 2002/084-16:38:00 through 20:33:00) were lost to a scripting error. Carrier level in the 6 minutes leading up to occultation 13617i (DSS 15, start time 2002/085-00:29:00) increased by about 1 dB. Reason for this behavior is not known. SNR and carrier level in data from occultations 13620i and 13621i (DSS 45, start times 2002/085-06:22:00 and 08:19:00) were 5-7 dB below expectations. There were also changes in carrier level of up to 1 dB. This behavior would be consistent with a heavy storm; but Tsys measurements from DSS 45 do not support such a conclusion. The signal during occultation 13619i (start time 2002/085-04:24:00) was captured at both DSS 15 (setting) and DSS 45 (rising). The data from DSS 45 appear to be of slightly higher quality (2 dB more SNR and less amplitude fluctuation in the carrier). This period was one of the times when our Doppler orbits were particularly bad -- due perhaps to the sparse tracking at the start of Beta Supplement. Dave Hinson had asked if we could do any better - I'm happy to (belatedly) accommodate this request - although for various reasons it took a while to get there. Below, I compare the orbit overlaps for two sets of orbits: a Doppler only set, and a set determined using both two-way Doppler data and altimeter crossovers. You will note that the radial component is especially improved, and the along-track excursions are also reduced. Both orbits use GMM-2B, an improved macromodel (12 plates including the articulation of the HGA as well as the solar arrays), and the modified Stewart 1987 atmosphere model used as a priori in Bruinsma and Lemoine (2002). Note that in all of these runs, accelerations were adjusted at the times of the AMD events. A Cd is adjusted daily, and single Cr is adjusted in each arc. Frequency biases and range biases are adjusted when the F1 and range data are used. In the Doppler+Crossover run, because of a temporary GEODYN incompatibility, I could not use the one-way Doppler data. These F1 data were used in the Doppler-only orbits. The final orbit statistics for each set of orbits are listed right after the orbit overlaps. It may be possible to do a further refinement. We used the a priori (Doppler only) orbits to construct our crossover data files - these include streams of altimetry on either side of the calculated crossover times. Unfortunately, because of the along-track excursions that you see below, our initial guesses of the intersections may have been "off" in some cases. The original file had 11041 crossovers, and we ended up using only 7703. So we could iterate and obtain some further improvement. ================================================================= RMS orbit overlaps for Doppler-Only orbits (all units meters) ----------------------------------------------------------------- rad cross along-tr total ndiffs overlap period ----- ----- -------- ----- ------ -------------- 0203+0208 1.29 3.06 6.60 7.39 6901 38.339 hrs 0208+0213 7.37 8.73 108.86 109.46 7621 42.339 hrs 0213+0218 5.13 8.44 60.11 60.91 7801 43.339 hrs 0218+0223 13.08 0.54 137.39 138.01 4201 23.339 hrs OD RMS over all five arcs ------------------------- RMS 2-way Doppler 0.0047 Hz (32937 obs) RMS 1-way Doppler 0.0045 Hz ( 7028 obs) RMS range 12.10 RU ( 89 obs) ================================================================= RMS orbit overlaps for Doppler+Altimeter Crossover orbits (all units meters) ----------------------------------------------------------------- rad cross along-tr total ndiffs overlap period ----- ----- -------- ----- ------ -------------- 0203+0208 0.60 2.83 4.24 5.13 " " 0208+0213 1.58 8.08 10.96 13.71 " " 0213+0218 2.05 6.97 20.91 22.14 " " 0218+0223 1.91 1.14 8.33 8.62 " " OD RMS over all five arcs ------------------------- RMS 2-way Doppler 0.0045 Hz (32937 obs) RMS Crossovers 3.49 meters (5892 obs included) 4.62 meters (total 7703 available)
