This correlates with a change to listen-only mode in the DKF file. Data from occultation 13654i (DSS 25, start time 2002/087-01:05:00) show a 0.5 dB carrier surge about 90 s before ingress. This correlates with nothing in either the DKF or SOE. Data from occultation 13655i (DSS 45, start time 2002/088-03:03:00) show the noise power rising about 2 dB in 3 min after ingress. Data from occultation 13658i (DSS 45, start time 2002/088-08:56:00) have carrier power about 10 dB below normal levels with +/-0.5 dB variations in prior to ingress. In early June 2003, Beta decreases to about 1 degree, its smallest value since early 2001 when it passed through zero. When Beta is zero, the orbit plane appears edge on if viewed from Earth. When Beta is larger than about 60 degrees, there are no Earth occultations. In early June Earth-Mars distance is about 0.72 AU; opposition is the last week of August 2003 (0.373 AU). This figure was provided by Pat Esposito of the MGS Navigation Team. Figures ======= Plot(s) illustrate some of the points made in the text.
