The quick-look processing of the measurements collected from the DSS 54 pass on DOY 164 did not appear to have the same carrier amplitude modulation as noticed in the DOY 163 or DOY 160 passes, as discussed in HEA2162A.TXT and HEA2163A.TXT. The measurements with carrier amplitude modulation from DSS 54 RSR2A on DOY 160/163 are still being investigated. We are considering that since DOY 154, the gain level for measurements from DSS 54 has been noticeably higher than expected. In his analysis, Joe Twicken has noticed slight clipping and modulation on all four measurements from DSS 54 RSR1A on DOY 154 although modulation was only apparent for one measurement using the 1 second averaging quick-look plots (as discussed in HEA2155A.TXT). Using 1 second averaging means that if shorter-period modulation exists on measurements, it is not necessarily detectable with quick-look processing. Gain levels for the recent passes on DSS 54 are summarized in the table below. The last column notes whether or not modulation was obvious using the quick-look 1 second averaging. We expect normal gain levels to be within -4dB to -5dB.
