This is in reference to the intermittent problem when the antenna elevation is below 30 degrees. Troubleshooting had revealed that the elevation and azimuth position offset switches were intermittent in the Data Converter Assembly - all appears OK at this time. The following observations had noisy carrier amplitude levels prior to occultation. This behavior is consistent with observations at low elevation angles. Occultation Start Date/Time DSS Magnitude ----------- ----------------- --- --------- 17105i 2002/005-03:33:00 45 +/-0.7 dB 17118i 2002/006-05:03:00 63 +/-0.5 dB 17124i 2002/006-16:49:00 15 +/-0.3 dB All of the data collected at DSS 54 (occultations 17131i-17133i) had fluctuations in both the carrier and noise level ranging from +/-0.3 dB to +/-0.5 dB. The pattern does NOT appear to be random; there is a period on the order of 60-75 s. Cause is unknown. Data from occultation 17120i (DSS 63, start time 2002/006-08:58:00) are accompanied by weak spurs +/-180 Hz on either side of the carrier. Telemetry may have been turned off late prior to occultation 17121i (DSS 63, start time 2002/006-10:56:00). There is only about 150 s of full-power carrier before ingress. There is no signal in data collected from occultation 17122i at DSS 63 (start time 2002/006-12:54:00). End-of-track (12:50) preceeded beginning of data collection. The occultatiohn was successfully captured at DSS 15. Data from occultation 17113i (start time 2002/005-19:15:00) were collected at both DSS 15 and DSS 45.
