PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2003-04-18 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA3108A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Errata ====== Yesterday's report (HEA3107A.TXT) announced availability of the new JPL planetary ephemeris DE409. Since then, Myles Standish has reported a possible amendment: DE409 might possibly be replaced by DE410 for MER (and other future Mars missions): there is a question about which planetary masses should be used in the ephemerides. This will be discussed early next week and notification will be sent. It is doubtful that such mass changes will cause any appreciable change in the ephemerides themselves, though this certainly will be checked. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Miscellaneous ============= Aseel Anabtawi reports that the April radio Science egress campaign has been concluded successfully. Data collection was monitored throughout, with Gene Goltz of the RSSG providing assistance. Eleven egress measurements were acquired as follows. Occultation 18365e was missed because of a gap in station coverage. This includes the following: Occultation Start Date/Time DSS ----------- ----------------- --- 18359e 2003/107-13:39:00 25 18360e 2003/107-15:57:00 25 18361e 2003/107-17:55:00 25 18362e 2003/107-19:53:00 43 18363e 2003/107-21:50:00 43 Aseel Anabtawi has discovered the source of a 30 dB shortfall in signal level on four occultations captured at DSS 43 (18336i through 18339i, start times 2003/105-18:05 through 23:58). Her report: The RSR group looked at the log, and didn't find any problems. Sal ran a few tests, and found nothing. Then ... the station personnel said that (sometime between the last SPC-40 MGS pass on DOY 103 and the pass on DOY 105) they were trouble shooting the fluctuation problem that Stanford has been reporting, and in the process, switched the polarization from X-RCP and X-LCP. They forgot that it would impact Radio Science and did not switch it back in order to continue investigating the fluctuation problem. They said that had I been looking at X-LCP, things would've been fine (it's been at least two years since I last had to look at X-LCP, and it was a DSP related problem. Anyhow, Sal reminded me that a 30 dB lower SNR is an indication that I'm looking at the wrong polarization). The station switched back to X-RCP in time for the DSS-43 pass on DOY 107 and the egress campaign. DR number is N100969.
