Simpson Stanford University ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION ============================================================================== This file contains an accumulation of corrections and notes for the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science Team Raw Data Archive - Extended Mission Phase. ============================================================================== CORRECTIONS AND NOTES ============================================================================== MORS_0601 An error in predicting occultation times led to situations in which and spacecraft telemetry modulation was turned on before the ingress MORS_0602 occultation took place (a reconfiguration that usually takes place while the spacecraft is in deep occultation). In other cases not only was the telemetry state changed, but the power amplifier was turned off. Occultations for which the controlling SOE was mm111b.04.tsoe (1035039D.SOE) should be used with caution. For occultation 8574i captured in 10371535.ODR the predicted occultation time was 41 s early; for occultation 8587i (10381705.ODR) the predicted time was 47 s early. For more detail see HEA/HEA1039A.TXT and its two figures on MORS_0602. The following table lists occultations and ODR files known to be corrupted. Note that occultations 8572i and 8573i did not seem to be affected. MORS_0656 MORS_0603 Began omitting/removing the following keywords from label files because of inconsistent use within the Project: MISSION_PHASE_TYPE MISSION_PHASE_NAME MORS_0604 Because of a failed software upgrade the "chronological" ordering thru of data on MORS_0604 through MORS_0607 is somewhat out of whack. MORS_0607 ECH, MCH, and ODR data (and their derivatives ECT, MCT, and BRO) were delayed because it was impossible to query for several days. HEA files do not necessarily accompany ECH and MCH data. MORS_0605 Eleven occultations (ODR files) were lost on 2001/048 and 049 because of a subtle scripting error. Details are in HEA1057A.TXT in directory HEA of MORS_0604. MORS_0609 The following files have incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME values in their labels. The corresponding entries in INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB are also incorrect. The year should be corrected to 2001. ODF/1034034A.ODF ODF/1034034B.ODF MORS_0612 The following files have incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME values in their labels. In fact, the last data in the ECH and MCH directories (typically our criterion for labeling) are only from 2001-03-31. MORS_0617 ODR/11040258.ODR was incomplete. The data were recovered and appear on MORS_0621 as ODR/1104025I.ODR. A new BRO file also appears on MORS_0621 under the name BRO/11040258I.PS1. MORS_0617 ECT and MCT for 2001-105 were accidently written to MORS_0617. and They should have appeared on MORS_0618. MORS_0618 MORS_0623 ODR/11320016.ODR has 13 records missing 10-15 seconds before ingress. The missing records were recovered later and a new file (ODR/1132001G.ODR) was written to MORS_0624. The new file has a duplicate record (#429) but it and its companion BRO/1132001G.PS1 should be substituted wherever these data are needed. MORS_0623 Files in the ODR and BRO directories on these two volumes are out and of order. The following ODR files and their labels (and the MORS_0624 corresponding BRO files and labels) are on MORS_0624 but should have been placed on MORS_0623: 11310043.ODR 11310241.ODR 11310834.ODR 11311032.ODR 11311230.ODR 11311427.ODR 11311625.ODR 11311823.ODR 1132001G.ODR The following files (and their labels) in the BRO directory on MORS_0624 should have appeared on MORS_0623: 11330147.PS1 11330345.PS1 11330543.PS1 11330740.PS1 11330938.PS1 11331136.PS1 11331220.PS1 11331334.PS1 11331418.PS1 11331532.PS1 11331616.PS1 11331729.PS1 11331813.PS1 11331927.PS1 MORS_0627 CALIB/TSC00037.LBL has a typo in the first line. The keyword thru should be PDS_VERSION_ID. MORS_0643 MORS_0637 ODR/11891616.ODR is incomplete. The full occultation was captured in ODR/1189161G.ODR on MORS_0638. Same applies to the corresponding files in the BRO directories. MORS_0639 The following files have incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME values in their labels. The corresponding entries in INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB are also incorrect. The year should be corrected to 2001. In fact, the last set of ECH and MCH files is from 2001-07-30. CALIB/TSC00037.LBL and CALIB/TSC00038.LBL have a typo in the first line. The keyword should be PDS_VERSION_ID. MORS_0645 This volume contains DKF files for the first six months of the Extended Mission. DKF files had been defined at the beginning of the mission but were never collected and archived because of a mistaken assumption that they duplicated the contents of SOE files. That was found not to be true in early August, when the backlog of DKF files was captured and saved, beginning with this volume. This volume contains two RSR files, the first of their kind. These two contain data also captured on ODR files (see ODR/11220048.ODR and 11220246.ODR on MORS_0621). ODR/12171046.ODR contains data from a bistatic radar (surface scattering) experiment. The label 12171046.LBL contains a summary of the experiment in the NOTE field. The data in this file were obtained electronically for quick-look analysis. More data will be delivered via tape later. MORS_0651 The RSR directory contains bistatic radar (surface scattering) thru data collected with the Radio Science Receiver. Separate MORS_0653 files were collected for RCP and LCP as follows Volume RCP File LCP File Notes --------- ------------ ------------ ------------------ MORS_0651 12170516.RSR 1217051G.RSR spacecraft two-way MORS_0651 12170659.RSR 1217065J.RSR spacecraft two-way MORS_0652 12170749.RSR 1217074J.RSR noise only MORS_0652 12170839.RSR 1217083J.RSR orbit 10772 MORS_0653 12171036.RSR 1217103G.RSR orbit 10773 MORS_0653 The following files have incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME values in their labels. The corresponding entries in INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB are also incorrect. The year should be corrected to 2001. ODF/1236236A.ODF ODF/1236236B.ODF MORS_0654 The label file for HEA1247A.PS1 in the HEA directory was missing. The volume was remade; but version 2 had AAREADME.TXT, ERRATA.TXT, and CUMINDEX.TAB information for volumes through MORS_0718. MORS_0657 There are 8 files of RSR test data and one file of ODR test data on this volume. All were acquired over the same time period. The file names deviate from the usual naming convention because of the large number of files. The RSR data were supposed to have been collected using 16-bit I and 16-bit Q samples; because of a configuration error, the I and Q samples were actually only 8 bits. MORS_0662 There are 8 files of RSR test data and one file of ODR test data on this volume. All were acquired over the same time period. MORS_0669 There are 8 files of RSR test data and one file of ODR test data and on these volumes. All were acquired over the same time period. MORS_0670 The file names deviate from the usual naming convention because of the large number of files. The BRO file appears again on MORS_0674, in that case accompanied by RSR/13470220.RSR and its label. MORS_0674 These volumes contain only RSR data -- two files in each RSR and directory, and the corresponding PostScript files in the BRO MORS_0675 directory. The sampling rate was accidently set to 100 ksps for the first three DSN passes on 2001/347, resulting in 50 times more data than expected. Ingress data were collected, but the occultations themselves weren't observed because of the HGA rewind, so no queries were submitted for those data. Two of the remaining DSS 65 egress occultations at 100 ksps were apparently lost when the script was interrupted to reset the sampling rate to 2 ksps. The four RSR files on these two volumes represent the only RSR data that were salvaged from the first 12 observations scheduled. Five later occultations on 2001/347 (including ingress with HGA rewind) were captured at 2 ksps and archived on MORS_0676. MORS_0677 These volumes each contain an RSR file acquired with the erroneous and 100 ksps sampling rate (see erratum for MORS_0674 and MORS_0675). MORS_0678 13471406.RSR (about 340 MB) is on MORS_0677 and 13471604.RSR is on MORS_0678. These are out of sequence because both data files were temporarily lost in the MGS Ground Data System. MORS_0679 DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT does not mention AMD_CAL0.LBL and its thru associated files. AMD_CAL0.LBL includes a misspelling of MORS_0740 Stuart Demcak's name. Both problems were fixed on MORS_0741. MORS_0681 Data in the ODF directory are erroneous. Files 1358359A.ODF and 1361359A.ODF were replaced by 1358361A.ODF on MORS_0682. Coverage of ODF/1354358A.ODF was incomplete. A system failure caused loss of all or parts of data from 2001/352-355. MORS_0684 An error in file naming resulted in there being RSR files 20010109.RSR and 2001010T.RSR but no 2001010J.RSR. Some files ordinarily expected in the CALIB directory were accidently omitted. The missing files can be found on other 'nearby' volumes such as MORS_0683 or MORS_0685. MORS_0674 Accumulated phase in the headers of RSR files is not correct; there thru is a discontinuity at one second boundaries. The error was to be MORS_0686 corrected in the next version of the RSR software (after 2620), but when that was to take place was TBD as MORS_0686 was prepared. MORS_0692 Extra character in line 261 of CATALOG/REF.CAT. thru MORS_0700 MORS_0704 Two TCK files are incorrectly named. 0040154A.TCK covers data through only 2000/123 and should have been named 0040123A.TCK. 0155207A.TCK starts on 2000/124 and should have been named 0124207A.TCK. MORS_0709 The VOLUME_NAME in VOLDESC.CAT was incorrectly given as VOLUME 0709: 2002-02-25 TO 2002-02-25 The correct VOLUME_NAME should have been VOLUME 0709: 2002-02-26 TO 2002-02-26 MORS_0711 There are no ECH and ECT files on this volume because the spacecraft entered Contingency Mode on 2002/058 and no communication had been re-established by day 059. Several days later, another query netted no engineering data. These appear to be lost. MORS_0712 Spacecraft entered Contingency Mode on 2002/058. Normal operations resumed late on 2002/065 or early 066. MORS_0713 ECH, ECT, MCH, and MCT data from 2002/066 are on MORS_0714, not MORS_0713. MORS_0715 AAREADME_EXT.TXT incorrectly identifies two MORS_0714 volumes. The second volume should be MORS_0715. MORS_0720 DOCUMENT/GDN_SPK.TXT has two lines with 81 characters. thru MORS_0723 MORS_0723 The BRO and RSR directories are both empty. MORS_0738 First volume produced on the new workstation with the PlexWriter and cdrtoaster software. This volume contains an incorrect statement in ERRATA.TXT regarding upper case file and directory names. The case problem was resolved after ERRATA.TXT was written and before the CDs were cut. MORS_0743 TDF data between 2002/132 and 2002/136 were not available when this volume was compiled. The Radio Metric Data Conditioning Team (RMDCT) promised delivery later, but they never appeared. MORS_0775 2297153J.RSR and 2297153J.PS1 appear on this volume in the RSR and BRO directories, respectively. Usually the 'J' indicates that these are the second of at least two parallel data collections; in this case, there are no 22971539.* files. MORS_0781 2315210P.RSR and 2315210P.PS1 appear on this volume in the RSR and BRO directories, respectively. Usually the 'P' indicates that these are the third of at least three parallel data collections; in this case, there was a 23152105 pair of files but no 2315210F pair. MORS_0784 HEA/HEA2329A.TXT is erroneously repeated on this volume. It appeared previously on MORS_0783. MORS_0795 During the Network Simplification Plan upgrade (approximately thru January to March 2003), some tracking data were acquired with MORS_0838 stations using incompatible systems. For example, three-way (approx) TDFs in which the uplink station was NSP (e.g., DSS 25) and the downlink station was not (e.g., DSS 14) will be incomplete or incorrect. Users should be alert to inconsistencies in these data. ODFs acquired using incompatible systems were generally corrected, but TDFs (because of their lower popularity and greater complexity) were not. MORS_0799 02199199A.TDF in the TDF directory contains only about 10 hrs of data. It was delivered by RMDCT as 02199t201.sc94, suggesting that the version here has been truncated. If the full file is found, it will appear on a later volume. MORS_0801 The list of volumes at the beginning of AAREADME shows two volumes MORS_0800. The second should be MORS_0801. MORS_0802 Beginning with this volume, the date has been removed from the top of the text section in both AAREADME.TXT and ERRATA.TXT. Users should refer to the PUBLICATION_DATE in the prepended label. MORS_0805 The following file in the ODF directory has erroneous values in ODF File Label Group Data record. The format is supposed to be YYMMDD, but values are YYYYMMDD. When converted to the value for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME in ODF label files, the year becomes 3903. This then propagates into INDEX/{,CUM}INDEX.TAB. A new file was created and appears on MORS_0817 as 3037037B.ODF. PRODUCT_ID ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID ------------ ----------------------- 3037037A.ODF 03037O037_43NSPDEMO.DAT MORS_0808 Two RSR files on this volume contain edited data that appeared in unedited form on MORS_0806. In both cases, the editing removed data in which there was no signal or the signal was weak. The editing simplified calculation of Allan Deviation. These were test data (no occultations). It should be extended to include 2003-02-23 (03/054). The error was corrected on MORS_0810. MORS_0810 The following file in the ODF directory has erroneous values in ODF File Label Group Data record. The format is supposed to be YYMMDD, but values are YYYYMMDD. When converted to the value for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME in ODF label files, the year becomes 3903. This then propagates into INDEX/{,CUM}INDEX.TAB. A new was created and appears on MORS_0817 as 3056057B.ODF. The format is supposed to be YYMMDD, but values are YYYYMMDD. When converted to the value for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME in ODF label files, the year becomes 3903. This then propagates into INDEX/{,CUM}INDEX.TAB. New files were generated and appear on MORS_0817 as 3061062B.ODF, 3064064B.ODF, and 3065065C.ODF. For unknown reasons no CSV or MCT files could be generated from this original. MORS_0829 File 3121142A.SPK was incorrectly stored in the SPK directory with its original SFDU label. The correct file was saved as 3121142B.SPK on MORS_0831. MORS_0831 A timing problem in the Payload Data System corrupted time tags in the spacecraft engineering data between days 124 and 127. As a result, the volume of engineering data is significantly lower on those days (in fact, there is none on days 125 and 126). MORS_0807 Starting with day 2003/046, DSN Monitor data from some antennas thru were incompletely processed. The primary indication in the MORS_xxxx archive is absence of CSVyydddC.MCH files in the MCH directory when the companion yddddddC.MCH file is present. Corresponding files in the MCT directory will also be missing. This was a result of the NSP upgrade (see also note regarding NSP affected data on MORS_0795 through MORS_0838.
