The favorable opposition this year makes Mars very bright in the morning sky; but clear air and the presence of the Moon for reference made picking out the red planet easier. Venus is sometimes visible during daylight hours at maximum elongation; but Mars is a more difficult target for the naked eye. Cause for this is not known. We were able to locate only DSS 65 DSN monitor data for this pass, suggesting a late switch in antenna coverage that was not communicated to RSSG in time to rescript the open-loop equipment. This does not explain the presence of SOME signal, however.
