PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2003-10-27 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA3300A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= Due to the weekend, this is the first health report since HEA3297A.TXT. Subreflector Motion and Phase Test Results: Joe Twicken has examined an ingress occultation captured at both DSS 63 and DSS 14. Although the ingress itself was obscured by the high-gain antenna (HGA) rewind, good carrier signal was observed with both antennas before the HGA moved off Earth point. For this observation, the subreflector at DSS 63 was fixed; this has been the normal configuration for several months -- eliminating any possible phase artifacts from changes in the propagation path within the antenna structure. The subreflector at DSS 14 was allowed to move; this is the normal DSN configuration when occultation data are NOT being collected. Adjusting the subreflector allows gain corrections as the structure of the reflector is deformed by gravity. Radio Science has taken the conservative position that small losses in gain were acceptable during occultations whereas changes in phase were not. But no data have been collected on the presumed phase effects of subreflector motion. The two observations of occultation 20603i started at 2003/291-01:01:00, have very similar carrier amplitude stability, and have carrier-to-noise ratios within 1 dB of each other. After his analysis Joe declares them "both very clean recordings" with "comparable" Allan deviations of 1.3e-13 at 4 seconds. Additional test data were collected on 2003/297 and 2003/298 and will be analyzed shortly. Occultation 20698i (DSS 63, start time 2003/298-19:27:00) was checked and it appears the HGA rewind begins more than 3 minutes before ingress. Four of five ingress occultations on 2003/297 at DSS 15 have little or no carrier signal (less than 5 dB above the noise baseline). Cause for the anomaly is unknown. All occultations at DSS 34 on 2003/297 were lost because of an RSR user conflict at the station. Deficiency Report N101552 was issued. Spurs (as in +/-60, +/-180 Hz from carrier) were generrally visible in data collected at 70-m antennas and in scattered instances at 34-m antennas. All egress occultations at DSS-26 passes on 2003/298 and 2003/299 exhibit a noise "skirt" (+/-100 Hz, ~15 dB). The following occultations had low ADC input and/or SNR: Occultation Start Date/Time DSS Comments ----------- ----------------- ----- -------------------------- 20685e 2003/297-16:25:00 63 ADCin -4 dB 20697e 2003/298-15:58:00 63 ADCin -6 dB; SNR -1.5 dB 20698e 2003/298-17:55:00 63 ADCin -6 dB 20701e 2003/298-23:49:00 63 ADCin -4 dB 20701e 2003/298-23:49:00 26 ADCin -4 dB; SNR -3.5 dB The following occultations exhibited uplink ramp leakage: Occultation Start Date/Time DSS Comments ----------- ----------------- ----- -------------------------- 20685e 2003/297-16:25:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20686e 2003/297-18:23:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20687e 2003/297-20:20:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20688e 2003/297-22:18:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20692e 2003/298-06:09:00 14 uplink ramp leakage 20692e 2003/298-06:09:00 26 uplink ramp leakage 20698e 2003/298-17:55:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20699e 2003/298-19:53:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20670e 2003/298-21:51:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20671e 2003/298-23:49:00 63 uplink ramp leakage 20702e 2003/299-01:46:00 26 uplink ramp leakage The following occultations had small random fluctuations in the free-space carrier amplitude: Occultation Start Date/Time DSS Comments ----------- ----------------- ----- -------------------------- 20685e 2003/297-16:25:00 63 +/-1 dB fluct 20689e 2003/298-00:16:00 14 +/-0.7 dB high freq fluct 20697e 2003/298-15:58:00 43 -3 dB dip 20697e 2003/298-15:58:00 63 +/-1 dB fluct 20702e 2003/298-01:46:00 26 large ring at occ.
