He said that MGS and MEX have resolved their problems with the MGS ranging channel's interfering with MEX uplink as follows: MGS will not change the range parameter. MEX will identify times of critical uplink and let MGS know by e-mail a few days in advance. For those passes, MGS will turn off uplink range tones altogether. This is not expected to happen very often. So the ranging data we've been receiving lately are unchanged from ranging data collected before the MEX problem. Having said that, LMA just submitted and received approval for an MCR to change the MGS ranging parameters because of the increased distance to Mars and lower SNR of the ranging signal. Additional integration time is needed to improve the quality of the ranging data. Their request increases ranging integration times to T1 = 140 s and T2 = 30 s. This will result in a cycle time of 360 s. Currently T1 = 62 s and T2 = 10 s (cycle time = 142 s).
