Some security issues were identified during testing Tuesday evening, and those were addressed yesterday. Last night, in the course of normal operations, we discovered that all communication between the SOPC and JPL had been lost. As a result, we have been unable to query for RSR radio science, spacecraft, and DSN monitor data; and we have not been able to process some kinds of data (such as those requiring access to the JPL MATLAB license manager). Russell Byrne (JPL) says he has assigned our problem high priority, and he has put one of his top VPN people on it; he will advise when the situation changes. In the meantime, the path between the SOPC and Stanford machines seems to have been unaffected; so we have been able to collect data on the Stanford side (including some that originate at JPL) and move files into position for archiving. Jesse Glance advises that the Mars Relay hardware on MGS has been powered down indefinitely. This may result in a thermal transient in the USO. The following are slightly edited abstracts from Jesse's recent e-mails on the subject: (I) wanted to confirm what was likely discussed at the Spacecraft Team meeting: all available indications show MR powered OFF on DOY-218/00:31 SCET. Payload Bus current consumption decreased by about 10 Watts and MR Electronics temperature dropped approximately 7 deg C. Other instrument teams may want to note the MR power OFF as cause for their temperature drops -- especially USO, MOLA Electronics, and MAG Electronics temperatures. MGS is on-call for Mars Exploration Rover (MER) emergencies which can't be resolved with 2001 Mars Odyssey UHF relay support alone.
