Danny Kahan reports completion of the latest egress occultation campaign; his report has been edited slightly. The May Radio Science Egress Campaign finished yesterday evening. Though the signal was not stationary, we kept track of this signal, and it continued to be present throughout the remainder of the DSS-43 pass and the beginning of the DSS-55 pass. During the measurements observed, this signal did not enter into the 2 KHz RSR recording bandwidth that is normally used by MGS during ingress or egress. Monitor window dumps were taken during the last ingress (27782i) at DSS-43 and the first egress (27783e) at DSS-55. The first shows the two-way MGS signal offset -45000 from the center of the spectrum and the secondary signal offset about +30000. The secondary signal was present prior to enabling two-way non-coherent mode and entering ingress. The second window dump shows a secondary signal to the far left of the one-way signal during ingress at DSS 43. In the third window dump (from DSS 55), the secondary signal appears to the right of the one-way signal during egress. This signal behaved independently of whether the transmission was one-way or two-way, or whether MGS was supposed to be transmitting or not. Further investigation today revealed that this signal could still be found, even when the spacecraft was behind the planet. Further analysis will be forthcoming.
