PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2005-09-22 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA5265A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= MGS entered safe mode on 26 August (2005/238). See HEA5241A.TXT for more information. Sami Asmar reported on 7 September (2005/250) that LMA had recovered the spacecraft earlier in the day. We have seen no information on resolution of problems (if any) which led up to the incident. The next day Sami forwarded the message below from Maria Bigwood of the MGS Mission Planning and Sequencing Team. Her reference to "egress scans" means that MGS will be doing both ingress and egress occultations on a regular basis, whereas Beta Supplement limited us to ingress except for special campaigns every month or two. I have some good news for Radio Science. I'm not sure if you've heard much on MGS's status, but when the spacecraft went to Safe Mode, the HGA accidently crossed the "obstruction" zone below 43 degrees in azimuth. The result is that we've decided to come out of Safe Mode into Nominal Mapping Operations (not Beta Supplement). As before, we will be able to do Radio Science Egress Scans on a regular basis. I'm building a background sequence right now to playback our data from before Safe Mode entry...the SOE should be out later this morning and will contain the Radio Science information. On 20 September, Asmar provided further information: It turns out, we won't see beta-supp again for a long time if ever. The obstruction is considered "gone" and we will be in the normal mapping for at least a year. They will do an actual in-flight test in late November to cross the obstruction zone. If it is there, then a strategy would be developed for the following year. In this scenario, however, because there can not be beta-supp on the opposite side, then starting in December they would do an angle offset and we would get our data. Dave Hinson acknowledged receipt of the new data on 13 September in a message to Sami; but he noted that the data have shorter "baselines" than expected. That is, the recordings are only 7-8 minutes long with 4-5 minutes being the typical time with the carrier probing the atmosphere. He was concerned that not enough time was available to establish the signal amplitude and phase above the neutral atmosphere. The latest recordings have 30 km less vertical coverage than before the safe mode incident. The MGS Project has forwarded a request for a longer baselines to LMA.
