With slow degradation of the solar cells, it is no longer possible to operate at full power when the spacecraft is at maximum distance from the Sun. Measures being considered include powering down MOLA, TES, and/or the spacecraft transponder. Complicating matters is the need to protect MGS in its role as backup to 2001 Mars Odyssey in relays to/from other assets in the martian environment. No decisions have been reached yet. To minimize confusion in planning future occultation campaigns, the Radio Science Systems Group has accepted responsibility for planning and overseeing such campaigns. Recording of ingress occultations was suspended in January, and a special ingress campaign was scheduled in February to sample the northern hempisphere atmosphere during one 24-hour period. The fact that the February campaign had been approved by MGS and was implemented by the Spacecraft Team never got back to RSSG, so no RSR operations were scheduled and the data were never collected. This loss was apparently not discovered until March. The new RSSG role will be part of the ISA closure process.
